In the second inning of Saturday’s matchup between the Sacramento River Cats and the Oklahoma City Red Hawks at Raley Field, Michael Taylor, the River Cats’ hulking center fielder, stepped to the plate to face hard-throwing Red Hawk pitcher and enigmatic Houston Astros prospect Jarred Cosart. It was Taylor’s first game back from what was seemingly his umpteenth cup of coffee in the major leagues, a ten-day stay in Oakland in which Taylor managed just one hit in 23 at-bats. A mere 90 feet away, standing in a defensive crouch on the infield dirt near third base, was Red Hawks slugger Brett Wallace. Wallace himself was back in AAA after opening the season in the major leagues with the Astros. He, too, had struggled in that stint, with just one hit in 24 at-bats. Like Taylor, he has see-sawed between the big club and the minors over the past couple of years, failing to hit consistently enough to establish himself as a big league regular. The two players have a lot more in common than on...

Brett Wallace – Familiar Face In A Familiar Place

Brett Wallace was once thought of as a top prospect within most Major League Baseball circles.  Originally drafted 13th overall in the 2008 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, he was the main centerpiece of a trade that brought over current Cardinals leftfielder, Matt Holliday, from the Oakland A’s to St. Louis. Despite being so talented, his stay with the A’s was short-lived...

Astros 4, Pirates 2(11)

Jason Castro led off the 11th inning with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a close play at the plate as the Houston Astros topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Saturday night. Castro doubled off the top of the center-field fence against Bryan Morris (1-2), and Carlos Pena was intentionally walked one out later. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Castro scored when he...

Royals-Astros Preview

(AP) -- The Houston Astros' starters have done a better job of late. That wasn't the case for Bud Norris the last time he took the mound, and he'll look to bounce back when he faces the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. Houston (13-32) defeated the Royals 6-5 on Monday, ending a four-game home losing streak and avoiding a third straight defeat there to Kansas City...

Game 44 Preview: Pirates vs. Astros

Astros (12-31) at Pirates (25-18) 1;35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT It’s dumb to call this a big game, but the Pirates are somewhat in need of a better effort today. They were lucky to escape with a victory on Friday, couldn’t get going at the plate yesterday, and are now at risk of dropping a home series to the awful Astros. Tonight’s starters… Lucas...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros – Game 44

To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement.  There is a very real argument that the Pirates should be on the verge of being swept by the Astros. It reminds me too much of last year when the Pirates were amazing against the challenging part of their schedule but fell apart once it let up.…

Astros 4, Pirates 2

The Pirates’ suffered from a rare letdown by the bullpen on Saturday night, but the offense was the true culprit in a disappointing loss to the Astros that evened this weekend’s series. Houston starter (and former Bucco) Erik Bedard kept the Bucs at bay for six innings. They notched two runs against him with seven hits, but couldn’t build a sustained rally against their teammate...
