Found December 17, 2011 on MLB Trade Rumors:
The title of MLB's new International Talent Committee sounds global in scope, but there's no doubt of the central role the Dominican Republic will play in the committee's upcoming discussions about a possible international draft. It was appropriate, then, that MLB Player's Association executive director Michael Weiner spoke to the press in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo yesterday, just one day after introducing the committee stateside. Weiner and other MLBPA representatives outlined a number of goals focusing on protecting and helping Dominicans and other Latino players, but they face a growing rumble of criticism about the committee's makeup and its perceived plans for Latin America. "We're analyzing things to see what is the best solution," Weiner said, as reported in Spanish* by Dionisio Soldevila at the Dominican daily Hoy (link in Spanish). "If it was up to the owners, they'd do it right now. The players are open to that same d...

Mets GM Sandy Alderson appointed to MLB committee to study international draft

The Job Behind The Job?

There are times when you see a very distinct line drawn in the sand between Mets fans. Often times, both sides misunderstand something about the other side, and things get out of control. People who agree with things Alderson are doing are not tired of the same old tricks that never seem to work in NY, and are not tired of bad contracts and overpaid players underperforming. They...

Dark Clouds Shroud the Mets

Have you seen that drug commercial for those who suffer from depression? You know the one with the animated woman who has this little dark cloud that follows her everywhere? The Mets are that lady these days and there isn't a prescription big enough to handle the cloud the Mets are dealing with. Ever since the Wilpons became entangled in the fallout from Bernie Madoff, things...

Can We Please Stop Reporting That Sandy Alderson Is Shopping Jon Niese?

Sometimes it just boggles my mind how some bloggers can’t seem to differentiate between a writer’s speculation or a legitimate rumor. Case in point are these recent Jon Niese to Colorado for Seth Smith rumors. Before I tear into the heart of these outlandish attempts to fire up the fan base, let me begin with an actual rumor that nobody seemed to key in on. This a legitimate...

Coincidence of Opposites: Are the Mets headed in the right direction?

Some people think with certainty that the Mets are headed in the right direction, and others think with certainty that they are not headed in the right direction. For me, however, the answer is a bit more complicated. I’m torn; they are headed in the right direction, but also the wrong direction. What I mean is that while the team is now better run from a baseball perspective...

MLB, Union For Players to Begin Discussions For International Draft

While it wasn’t completed in time for the new collective bargaining agreement in Major League Baseball, the league and the MLB Players Association agreed that further discussions around the development of international players – including a worldwide draft – would begin, no later than January 15 of 2012. Today both sides announced the “International Talent Committee” that...

Mets Sign Swingman Chuck James

On Tuesday, general manager Sandy Alderson said he wanted to add some rotation depth as insurance in case Johan Santana isn’t ready to start the season. He followed through on that today as the Mets signed veteran left-handed swingman Chuck James to a minor-league contract. James received an invitation to major-league camp. James, 30, worked strictly out of the bullpen last season...

IF JON NIESE IS TRADED OR STAYS IT’S STILL A PLUS FOR THE METS

For everyone who says “why would Sandy Alderson even think about trading Jon Niese”? You got your answer yesterday when the San Diego Padres traded Matt Latos to the Cincinnati Reds for a cache of prime prospects. The Reds see 2012 as their shot at winning the NL Central and putting together a pitching rotation that would stand up to the post season test so they took the big...
