Phighting On:
A couple of moves within the Phillies' organization today, as third baseman Placido Polanco was moved to the 15-day DL, and Joe Blanton was moved from the 15 to the 60 day DL. The Polanco move, retroactive to August 7 (meaning Polanco can come back as early as Monday), opened up a spot on the active roster, which was filled by Lehigh Valley hurler and PhightingOn July AAA Pitcher of the Month Michael Schwimer. The 25 year old reliever, who has compiled a 9-1 record with a 1.88 ERA in 67 innings for the IronPigs this year, was also put on the 40 man roster in Joe Blanton's spot (hence the importance of moving Blanton from the 15 to the 60 day DL), making him available for the roster expansion roster in September.
Walking to the bullpen today, it was weird to see a pink feather-boa and matching backpack slung over Schwimer's 6-8 frame, but his dominance on the mound is nothing to laugh about. His 86 strikeouts give him a K/9 of 11.6, which is well above average.
Schwimer is also very active in social media, frequently updating his twitter @MSchwimer, as well as guest-writing for the blog Phuture Phillies. Phighting On wishes Michael the best of luck in the majors.
