I hate to focus on the local team as much as I do, but the news comes fast and furious when new owners and new general managers take over. Now, the Astros have a director of decision sciences in Sig Mejdal and a new statistical analyst in Mike Fast. These two moves alone represent a 180 degree turn from where the organization has been. Suddenly, an organization that pays attention to batting average, ERA, and RBI only has gone to an organization that is jumping headlong into pitch F/X, Field F/X, and Hit F/X.
I went to the SABR conference and presented my poster on the Hall of Fame Index. My poster was a solid representative among traditional presenters. In fact, by most accounts it finished in second place. It finished in second place to a presentation on hit F/X. That poster blew the field away and was done by a statistics department from a nationally renown university. Folks, we have now seen the next frontier in statistical analysis and most of us are playing catch up.
