Found October 31, 2011 on MetsZilla: Yardbarker Blogger Network

On May 20th of 2010, my co-founder, Jay Robotham and I announced the official launch of MetsZilla. I will never forget our first post, it was titled “Do the Mets have an ‘Ace’ up their sleeve,” and to our surprise, it was linked by MetsBlog’s Michael Baron here. In that post, Jay stated the following about who we believed was the future ‘ace’ of the Mets, Mike Pelfrey:

There’s something about a guy yelling at a batter to get back in the box as he did when Chase Utley was taking his time or asking for the ball to close out a 20 inning marathon game that speaks to his passion and leadership, two prerequisites for being crowned an ace. Mike Pelfrey is still mastering his craft , but the intangibles, the things that can’t be taught, are inherent to him and he is undoubtedly an ace in the making. It’s my belief that come 2011 there will be little doubt as to who is the Mets #1 starter, but that’s not because I expect Johan to regain his 2008 form, rather I envision Pelfrey taking that next step forward.”

What a difference a year makes. Mike ended his 2010 campaign with 15 wins and 3.67 ERA leaving many fans excited about watching #34 take yet, another step towards becoming the top end of a rotation guy most fans envisioned he would bed be. However, the 27-year-old former first round pick mustered just seven wins for the Mets in 2011 while boasting a putrid 4.74 ERA.  I believe it is safe to say Pelfrey failed to reach fan, blogger and even organizational expectations, having some fans hoping the Mets cut ties with the right hander this off-season.

So now the question becomes, what do the Mets do with Mike Pelfrey? The 6’7″ starter is eligible for arbitration and would surely see an increase in his $3.925 million salary. According to MLB Trade Rumors his projected increase would be upwards of $6 million. I know what your thinking because I thought it too, that’s almost $1 million a win; there has to be a better bargain out there than that. Here’s the thing, while I totally agree with most fans in that Pelfrey has been one of the biggest disappointments as well as one of the most frustrating players to watch I do believe the Mets should bring him back for 2012.

My reasoning behind this is simple. The one thing Pelfrey has provided the Mets with over his tenure, besides heartburn, is an ability to stay healthy while giving  the club a high number of inning pitched each season; which should not go over looked.

Over the last four seasons Mike has made no less than 31 starts while tossing close to 200 innings pitched in each of those season and even eclipsing the 200+ IP plateau twice:

Knowing that every fifth day you have a durable starter who can go out there and toss innings — the quality of those inning not with standing — has, in itself, become valuable in Major League Baseball and something that is not easily replacable. In 2011 less than 40 starters hit the 200 innings mark and in 2010, Mike was one of 44 starters to do so. As bad as Pelfrey was in 2011, there is still potential. In four seasons as a starter Mike has split the bill giving the Mets two seasons of a sub 4 ERA. Take away the pressure of being the clubs ‘ace’ — which he was dubbed in January of 2011 by Mets manager Terry Collins — and maybe, just maybe, Pelf can return to that form:

The bottom line here is Pelfrey may never become the ‘ace’ we envisioned he would be back in May of 2010. At this point is his career I am ok with that. With now lowered expectations from much of the clubs fan base , Big Pelf can servestill as a key cog at the back end of the Mets 2012 rotation. With help on the distant horizon in players such as Zack Wheeler, Matt Harvey, and Juerys Familia, keeping Pelf around for one more year, at least for this Mets blogger, is not a horrible idea.

Jason Bay, Mets Batters Get Citi Field Fences Moved in (Photo)

NEW YORK -- While not exactly tearing down this wall, the New York Mets are putting up a new fence at Citi Field that's shorter and closer to home plate. In an effort to boost scoring at the pitcher-friendly ballpark, the Mets announced Monday they are cutting the field dimensions by as much as 12 feet next season, lowering the fence height to 8-feet all around and changing the...

Writing about the Mets and reader comments

I love writing about the Mets. However, writing is frequently a solo occupation and it can be a very lonely thing. Fortunately, writing on the Internet is somewhat interactive and we have the comments section where readers can chime in and tell you how brilliant you are. Of course, they can also chime in and tell you the exact opposite. And let’s face it, fewer things in life...

Finally Some "Good" Off-Season News For Mets

...and no, it's not that they've signed Jose Reyes to a five year deal (unfortunately). The Mets have stated that Lucas Duda is no longer being affected by the after effects of the concussion he suffered when he ran into the RF wall while tracking down a fly ball in St. Louis. Mets Assistant GM John Ricco has confidence that Duda will be well enough to resume his role as Mets RF for 2012.

Mets unwillingly to offer six or more years to Reyes

In a report for the Daily News, Andy Martino says, “Sources familiar with the team’s thinking have maintained that the Mets are unwilling to offer six or seven years (to Jose Reyes), and might be uncomfortable with five.” In regards to the team’s parameters for re-signing Reyes, Martino quotes Sandy Alderson as saying, “We have a sense of where we would...

Citi Field new Dimensions Will anybody benefit?

The Mets announced some news yesterday. Of course it wasn’t about Jose.    Some think the only announcement the Mets will make about Jose down the line is thanking him for the great times he showed us as he signs another deal with a new team this off  season.   Hope not.  We can only hope this isn’t the big news of the off season. Say goodbye to the great wall in flushing...

New CBA Could Minimize Free Agent Compensation and Hurt The Mets

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports shares some details about the new Collective bargaining Agreement which is expected to be announced very shortly and possibly before the official start of free agency on Thursday. Unlike past negotiations between the owners and the Players Union, things have been going quite smoothly under the circumstances and both sides seem committed to getting this...

Mets' Reyes window open until Thursday

Jose Reyes officially became a free agent for the first time yesterday, and that doesn't figure to change anytime soon. The Mets' five-day window to exclusively negotiate with the All-Star shortstop ends at midnight on Thursday, when Reyes and his agents can find out what other teams think he...

Mets will take time before making Reyes offer

The Mets do not plan to make an offer to free-agent shortstop Jose Reyes anytime soon, general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday, nor do they expect Reyes to sign before December.

Heyman: Slim Chance Mets Keep Reyes

“There’s little evidence the Mets would go over five years for Reyes, the very talented and beloved but injury-prone homegrown star. And that just isn’t likely to be good enough. Reyes is known to want to stay in Queens, but the cash-strapped Mets, who have spoken of cutting their payroll by $30-to-40 million just don’t seem very likely to be close to the...

Hot Stove Time Means Farewell Jose

With the conclusion of the St. Louis Cardinals’ championship parade we have finally reached the off-season. The long, torturous months of August, September, and October watching other teams compete have finally come to a conclusion. Now instead of seeing L’s compile on the field, we get to embark into months of hot stoves chatter which will shape the future of the Mets. With...

The Citi Always Shrinks

The Mets detailed the changes they’re making to Citi Field: The walls will be uniformly lowered to eight feet, with a new wall of that height being placed in front of the current 15-foot wall in left field, which some people have come to call the Great Wall of Flushing. About 100 seats will be placed in the gap between the walls in a design that would seem to mimic the several...

Don’t expect Alderson to go to wall for Reyes

Fences in, Reyes out. The Mets are doing the right thing by moving the fences in at Citi Field and making them blue instead of their hitters blue. This is long overdue, a sore subject I’ve harped on since Citi Field opened, but as is often the case with...
