The 2011 season was basically a “make or break” type of season for Jeff Samardzija. And he rose to the occasion. For the first time in his career, Samardzija was kept in the same role and found a sense of stability, sticking with the Cubs all year. Despite a rash of pitching injuries, which led to the likes of Doug Davis and Ramon Ortiz finding starts in the rotation, Shark spent his entire season in the bullpen, and found great success. He gradually improved as the year went on, with his development finally showing, as he continued to develop multiple pitches and harness those pitches. After a couple of years that he really couldn’t find his niche and stick in Chicago, Samardzija put up career numbers. His ERA was a strong 2.97, with 87 strikeouts and a 1.30 WHIP in 88 innings. Are the Cubs looking to upgrade at second base?

It appears that the Cubs, like me, are not convinced that Darwin Barney is the long term (or even short term) answer at second base. Bruce Levine alluded to this in his Tuesday Chat on EPSN Chicago, when he stated that "Barney would be the ideal backup at 2B and SS." When asked about possible full-time replacements, Levin listed Martin Prado as a possibility, stating...

The Chicago Cubs Need To Trade Matt Garza ASAP

I admit that I love Theo Epstein. I look forward to having lunch with Jed Hoyer in a couple weeks, and I am fully prepared to share my thoughts on Matt Garza. It won’t be any different than my conversation with Tim Wiliken 3 days after Matt Garza was traded as I was against it then, and will be against hanging on to him. I’m sorry Cub fans, but Matt Garza is NOT an ace...

Is Brett Jackson ready for the majors?

Apparently Brett Jackson believes he's big league ready and, according to Dave van Dyck "the numbers just might bear him out."  Well, let's just see about that. Overall, Jackson has hit .292/.393/.491 over 3 minor league seasons.  He has shown a good eye, drawing 177 walks in 296 games, including 73 in each of the last two seasons.  He also has shown a good...

What else can baseball fans do in January but dream of October? In You May Say I'm a Dreamer, the Outside Corner staff will imagine the route to a World Series in 2012 title for all 30 teams. "Wait 'til next year..." It's a refrain that's beaten into your soul as a Cubs fan. Growing up in Chicago's northwest suburbs, it's one that I uttered many...

Bucs wanted Bedard instead of Maholm

When Paul Maholm signed with the Cubs as a free agent for one year and $4.75 million last week, many Pittsburgh fans wondered why the Pirates didn't step up to keep maybe the most consistent starting pitcher they've had in the past decade.

Vitters eager to pounce on opportunity

After battling through injuries and inexperience, Josh Vitters, the Cubs' top pick in the 2007 First- Year Player Draft, appears ready to compete for a chance to reach the big leagues in 2012.

Cubs take Corpas off big league roster

The Cubs removed reliever Manny Corpas, who is still recovering from elbow surgery, from the 40-man roster but will still invite him to spring training with a chance to make the team.

Corpas outrighted to make room for Wood

The Cubs opened a spot on the 40-man roster for Kerry Wood on Thursday when they outrighted pitcher Manny Corpas. Corpas now will be a non-roster invitee to Spring Training.
