This passt weekend, Jon Heyman said the Mets will not include Jon Niese, Ike Davis or any top prospects in a package to the A’s for Gio Gonzalez. Today, Andy Martino of the Daily News adds, though the Mets did discuss Gonzalez, “They are unlikely to pursue the pitcher,” according to two major league officials familiar with the team’s thinking. Lastly, in his report, Martino writes: “One rival executive, engaging in pure speculation, mused that the Mets could trade Jon Niese to a third team, acquire prospects, and flip those prospects to Oakland as part of a package for Gonzalez.” Gonzalez, 26, was 16-12 with a 3.12 ERA in 36 starts and 202 innings for the A’s last year. His 197 strikeouts were seventh most in the American League. However, he led the league in walks with 91.
