The story after the first game of yesterday's doubleheader was the return of Andy Pettitte. The story at the end of the second game was, of course, Ichiro Suzuki. His 7 hits and 4 steals went a long way in securing the Yankees sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday.Ichirio's 7 hits on the day might only have been 3, had Joe Girardi continued to be stubborn. With lefty Ricky Romero on the mound for the  Blue Jays in game 2, everyone feared Girardi would continue the insanity of inserting Andruw Jones in the lineup, as he has done all year when a southpaw opposes the Yankees. But Girardi finally did the right thing, and Ichiro ended up driving in the winning run.Has Girardi learned his lesson? Will he stop consulting his binder as if it were the Holy Bible? Time will tell. In the meantime, Yankee fans can look back with pleasure at a really fun day during the 2012 season.Other Notes:* I know I'm not the only Yankee fan who was ecstatic after Andy Pettitte's return to...

Andy Pettitte Doesn’t Disappoint In His Return

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was hopping for five innings and 70 pitches from the return of Andy Pettitte. Boy, did he get more. After a three-month stint on the disabled list, the veteran left-hander looked like he hadn’t missed a beat. In the first leg of a day-night doubleheader against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Pettitte gave Girardi five scoreless frames, 75 pitches and a...

Ichiro Suzuki Collects Infield Single After Hitting Ball Inside Jarrod Parker's Shirt (Video)

Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good. Ichiro Suzuki has been a little bit of both lately, but it's hard to argue he was being "good" when he lightly tapped a grounder back to the mound off A's starter Jarrod Parker on Friday. Then, the "lucky" took over. The ball somehow found its way into Parker's jersey, and the right-hander was unable...

Yankees hold on in Pettitte's return

Andy Pettitte pitched five sparkling innings in his return from a broken leg and his bullpen barely held on, keeping the New York Yankees atop the AL East with a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader. Pettitte (4-3) looked his old steely self in giving up four hits in his first September start since 2010. The 40-year-old left...

Suzuki goes 7-for-8 as Yankees sweep two from Jays

NEW YORK -- Ichiro Suzuki always goes up to the plate believing he is going to get a hit. It does not always translate, but during a brilliant doubleheader performance Wednesday, the New York Yankees outfielder seemed to be able to get hits on demand. Ichiro capped a four-hit night with a tiebreaking single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Yankees completed...

Blue Jays-Yanks postponed, doubleheader Wednesday

The game between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed because of inclement weather. The teams will play a day-night doubleheader Wednesday, with the opener starting at 1:05 p.m. and the second game at 7:05 p.m. A light rain fell and brisk winds whipped the flags above the ballpark when the game was called about three hours before...

Ichiro 7-for-8 in Yanks DH sweep

The chants of ''Ich-i-ro'' swelled in the eighth inning as the wiry batter with the slashing swing walked to home plate. With six hits already in this doubleheader, fans expected something special from the Japanese star. Surprising even himself, Ichiro Suzuki delivered. Suzuki had a go-ahead single in the eighth inning to help the New York Yankees complete a doubleheader...

Yanks outslug Jays, open 1-game lead

Streaking Ichiro Suzuki hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a seven-run fourth inning capped by Nick Swisher's grand slam, and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-7 Thursday night to open a one-game AL East lead over idle Baltimore. After struggling for much of the summer, the Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays and have won five in a row, their...
