After the news broke that Avisail Garcia would miss the remainder of the 2014 with a torn labrum, General Manager Rick Hahn had a job to do: add outfield depth to AAA Charlotte in lieu of Jordan Danks‘ promotion to the big league club. He took care of that job very quickly.
The team acquired 26-year old Gorkys Hernandez from the Kansas City Royals in return for cash considerations. Hernandez played 70 total big league games in 2012 for the Pirates and the Marlins, hitting just .212/.288/.341.
Gorkys’ career has come as a pretty big disappointment, as he was a top-100 prospect heading into 2008 and 2009. He’s played 825 minor league games dating back to 2006 and has proven that he’s a solid minor leaguer (.278/.339/.375) … but that’s about it.
If any of the White Sox’ four current true outfielders were to go down with an injury, Blake Tekotte, who we saw a good amount of in Chicago last year, would probably be the next guy up to fill a bench spot … but there’s really nobody else behind him, so Hernandez will fill that role.
