Chicago White Sox
The Baltimore Orioles have put together one of the majors' best records in the last month, but they'll face another surging team in the Chicago White Sox.
The two playoff hopefuls open a four-game series Monday night at Camden Yards.
Baltimore has won 17 of 25 for the majors' second-best record since July 29 and is tied for the second AL wild-card spot. The Orioles (69-57) won their first two games against last-place Toronto this weekend before Sunday's finale was postponed because of weather.
Chicago (71-55) figures to pose a far more difficult challenge as it enters this series after a 6-0 homestand to maintain a 2 1/2-game lead over Detroit in the Central. The White Sox completed a three-game sweep of Seattle with a 4-3 win Sunday after the game was called due to rain in the seventh.
"Mother Nature is looking at us and giving us the blessing," reliever Hector Santiago told the White Sox's official website. "Snake a win right there ... get out of here and go on the road trip."
Tyler Flowers hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh, Chicago's 32nd in the last 16 games. The White Sox lead the majors with 43 homers this month.
After losing 11 of 14 at home, the Orioles have won 10 of 13 there. They've averaged 5.5 runs and hit 22 homers during that stretch.
Right fielder Nick Markakis had two hits and two runs in Saturday's 8-2 victory over the Blue Jays, and is hitting .419 (13 for 31) in his last eight games.
Center fielder Adam Jones had two RBIs in that contest but hasn't homered in his last 104 at-bats, four shy of matching the longest drought of his career set in 2008. Jones, though, is 4 for 12 with three homers lifetime against scheduled White Sox starter Francisco Liriano.
Looking to bolster an inconsistent rotation, Baltimore acquired starter Joe Saunders from Arizona on Sunday in exchange for reliever Matt Lindstrom and a player to be named later. Saunders is 6-10 with a 4.22 ERA this year.
"I like our ballclub's chances,'' said Dan Duquette, the Orioles vice president of baseball operations. "There's an old saying: If you're going in the right direction, keep walking. So the addition of Joe Saunders gives us a chance to keep walking in the right direction."
Baltimore sends it most consistent starter to the mound in the series opener in Wei-Yin Chen (12-7, 3.87 ERA). The left-hander won his second straight start despite allowing five runs and seven hits over five innings as the Orioles rallied for a 7-5 win at Detroit on Aug. 19.
Chen limited the White Sox to two runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 3-2 victory on April 17.
Also looking to win a third consecutive start will be Liriano (5-10, 5.12), who has pitched very well in four of his five starts since joining the White Sox. He gave up two runs and six hits over six innings of a 7-3 win over the Yankees on Tuesday.
Liriano is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA in two starts against Baltimore this season.

For the first time in this whole season I, as a Baltimore Orioles fan, have hope.
Despite this being one of the most successful seasons in a long time for Baltimore there has always been this aura of doubt for me. I am always a pessimist when it comes to the ball club, so even with everything going great it was hard to see a bright future.
Things hit their breaking point when the...
“Every game there’s a different star, that’s the magic of Orioles baseball!”
Nick Markakis twice came up with the bases loaded, and twice failed to deliver not a single run.
Adam Jones was 0-for-4 on the night.
The team left eight runners on base.
No matter. The O’s have Lew Ford and Nate McLouth!
That’s right, in another improbable Orioles victory during this summer...
The Orioles on Monday night earned their 70th win of the season – quite an amazing accomplishment based on what many predicted in the winter. They beat a tough, gritty Chicago team that is leading American League Central and have won their third game in a row.
Two role players – Nate McLouth and Lew Ford came up huge on the night. Considering both guys were in baseball wilderness...
The Orioles tried to acquire a veteran starter at the end of July. A month later, they got their guy. Baltimore traded for veteran lefty Joe Saunders, sending reliever Matt Lindstrom and a player to be named to Arizona in the swap. Arizona will pay a portion of Saunders' $6 million contract. Saunders -- a free agent at year's end -- joins Wei-Yen Chen as solid lefties...
J.J. Hardy homered and scored three runs, rookie Steve Johnson allowed four hits over six innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-2 Saturday night to equal their win total of last season.
Hardy, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters each had two RBIs for the Orioles, who have won 14 of 20 since Aug. 3. Baltimore (69-57) is in the thick of the AL wild-card chase and...
The Baltimore Orioles acquired starting pitcher Joe Saunders from the Arizona Diamondbacks for reliever Matt Lindstrom and a player to be named later. The Diamondbacks also sent some cash to offset the $1 million plus still owed to Saunders for the rest of the 2012 season.Lindstrom had been acquired before the season along with Jason Hammel from the Rockies in the Jeremy Guthrie...
Nate McLouth hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, Lew Ford also connected and the Baltimore Orioles rallied to beat the White Sox 4-3 on Monday night, ending Chicago's six-game winning streak.
It was the franchise-record 13th consecutive one-run win for the Orioles, who trailed 2-1 in the sixth and 3-2 in the eighth.
After the White Sox went up 3-2 in the eighth against...

The Chicago White Sox are having a season that not many expected under first-year manager, Robin Ventura. They are 2 games up on the Tigers in the AL Central. They are an extremely tight group that likes to have fun. Recently, the Ventura made the decision to bust out in their very best (or maybe [...]
Earlier this afternoon, the Orioles completed a waiver wire trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks to send Joe Saunders to Baltimore for relief pitcher Matt Lindstrom. Lets break this trade down.
Joe Saunders is coming to town to fill the fifth rotation spot previously held by Tommy Hunter. Hunter has an ERA of nearly 6 (5.95), while Saunders’ is 4.22. The MLB average ERA is is 4...
Tyler Flowers hit a go-ahead homer just before the final downpour and the Chicago White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in a rain-shortened game Sunday for their sixth straight victory.
Immediately following a 6-minute rain delay in the seventh inning, Flowers launched a two-run shot off Kevin Millwood to lead first-place Chicago to its second consecutive series sweep.
There is no shortage of Michael Jordan jerseys in Chicago. The way to stand out from the crowd is to go against the grain and rock his #45 Chicago White Sox jersey. This is my number one MJ jersey that you could buy and is an absolute gem. Here’s some things about Jordan’s time with the White Sox that you may not know or remember:
Jerry Reinsdorf continued to honor Jordan’s...

As I sit here in the pressbox, Anthony is currently building an ark with his fellow fans in the stands. In between the raindrops he sends in this dispatch.
On Sundays, I usually have lunch with some friends before the game at one of the fine Baltimore establishments across the street from Camden Yards. Before this season, the topic of conversation would have...
