With it finally being September 1st, that means that roster expansions are now upon us. The White Sox have already made some roster moves on the very first day.
So far the White Sox have called up catcher Tyler Flowers, outfielder Alejandro De Aza, and right handed Gregory Infante.
Tyler Flowers has had an ok season in Charlotte this year. Flowers has a .220 average with only 76 hits. The plus side though is that out of those 76 hits 22 of them are doubles and 16 of them are homers. He has 53 RBI as well.He was named to the International League midseason All-Star team and is the White Sox #2 prospect.
Alejandro De Aza has had a good season in Charlotte hitting .302. He has 21 doubles, 4 triples, 5 home runs, and 49 RBI.He also had 16 stolen bases.
Gregory Infante went 3-4 with a 3.45 ERA, 12 saves, and 69 strikeouts in 55 games between both Class A teams (Winston-Salem and Birmingham). He has no major league experience.
These moves leave the active roster at 28 players and the 40 man roster at 40.
Along with the roster expansions, there is good news and bad news on the injury front.
The bad news is that Freddy Garcia left today’s game in the 5th inning with lower back stiffness. While it’s not expected to be a serious injury, this could be the signs that fatigue is hitting Freddy and with his injury prone status, things may get a lot worse for him.
The good news is that both Matt Thornton and J.J Putz are on track with their rehab and will be back with the White Sox soon. Thornton is expected to be activated for Friday’s series opener in Boston. He had a 40 pitch long toss session before today’s game and officially stated he is ready and able to pitch again.
Putz is on track and will be eligible to come off of the disabled list sometime next week.
So once those two guys are eligible to come back, I’d see a few of the guys just called up sent back down to Triple-A.
Roster moves to be made soon are expected to include Dayan Viciedo and Carlos Torres being brought back to the majors. Viciedo is expected to be brought up for this weekend’s series against the Red Sox. Torres will be eligible to come back once Charlotte’s season ends on September 6th.
