The Chicago White Sox swept a three-game series from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday with a 4-3 win, the first time the South Siders have scored a three-game sweep at Tropicana Field. However, they also left a lasting impression that might have a carryover when the two teams play again in late September at U.S. Cellular Field.

Both White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana and manager Robin Ventura were ejected from the game after the rookie left-hander threw a pitch behind the legs of Ben Zobrist in the fourth inning.

The belief was the Sox were retaliating from a pitch by Alex Cobb in the third, which hit catcher A.J. Pierzynski in the back.

A day earlier, Pierzynski slid late and hard past second base and into the left foot of Zobrist while breaking up a double play. In addition, Pierzynski has frequently been a target of teams in the past just because of the way he plays the game and the emotion he shows.

Either way, Rays manager Joe Maddon was not happy with Quintana's pitch, and he praised umpire Mark Wegner's response.

"When a pitcher throws behind someone like that, it's pretty obvious what their intent was -- regardless of the denials on the other side," Maddon said. "I thought the home plate umpire did a great job, and that really stopped it in its tracks."

Ventura had a much different opinion.

"I've never seen anything like that," Ventura said. "I don't know how to explain it. I was shocked. Usually if the guy feels it (had) intent, he gives warning and it goes from there, but it just shocked me."

Quintana did his part, claiming that he was not throwing at Zobrist.

"I was going to throw a fastball, but (Pierzynski) asked for a changeup and instead of crossing him over, I went through and it just slipped away," Quintana said.

With John Danks close to coming off the 15-day disabled list, Quintana is likely headed back to the minors, but he pitched well in his two starts and showed the Sox that he will protect his teammates.
