Does RA Dickey have to do everything for the Mets?
It seems that he does, especially of late. The Mets entered Saturday’s game with the Astros on a six game losing streak including a four game sweep of the lowly Colorado Rockies.

So who do the Mets turn to to end their skid? Dickey of course.Dickey had another Cy Young caliber outing to earn his 16th win of the season when the Mets beat the Astros 3-1. Dickey went seven innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out two. Dickey also helped the anemic Mets offense when he drove in a run with an infield single.
He might not be expected to do everything, but he did his best on Saturday. The start was just the latest example of just how good Dickey has been this season. Dickey is 16-4 with a 2.76 ERA and 183 strikeouts to only 41 walks. If he were to stop pitching today he would have good enough numbers for Cy Young consideration. And he’s doing all of this playing for a team that may finish last in their division.

Not only do Dickey’s numbers support Cy Young consideration, but he has also been one of the feel good stories of the 2012 baseball season. The 37-year old knuckleballer has never been in the limelight like he has with the Mets, and he always seems to be taking it in stride.
He’s also never put himself over the team despite his breakout season and the Mets recent plunge into the basement of the NL East.
After earning his 15th win against the Miami Marlins, Dickey was more focused on stopping a home losing streak than his 15th win.

“That nine-game streak that was stopped today is more important than the 15 wins,” Dickey said after that game.

But perhaps the biggest reason Dickey should get the nod for National League Cy Young is because he is doing all this while playing for a team that makes it nearly impossible for him to win. Just like Felix Hernandez did for Seattle in 2010, Dickey has single handily won the Mets games while also being robbed of numerous wins by their ineffective bullpen and inability to score enough runs.Hernandez won the American League Cy Young Award that year with only 13 wins.
Of course, there is still a month left in the season for Dickey to either strengthen or ruin his resume. If Dickey finishes strong and gets a few more wins under his belt, it will be hard to argue against him winning his first Cy Young Award.

Astros tumble to Dickey, Mets

NEW YORK (AP) -- R.A. Dickey helped his own cause for his 16th victory, driving in a run with an infield single and pitching seven solid innings Saturday as the New York Mets ended a six-game skid by beating the Houston Astros 3-1. Justin Turner hit his first homer of the season and Jason Bay snapped an 0-for-14 slump with an RBI single in the eighth to end a stretch of offensive...

Post Game: Mets 3 Astros 1

Despite being unable to wear his bracelets, RA was able to contain the Astros. The Mets snapped their losing skid today by beating the Astros by a score of 3-1. RA Dickey won his 16th game of the season as he hurled 7 innings of one run ball. While he only struck out 2, the Astros did not make much solid contact at all today. After Dickey was done, Jon Rauch and Josh Edgin combined...

GM: Mets want to keep Dickey, Wright

Sandy Alderson is set on keeping All-Stars David Wright and R.A. Dickey with the Mets. New York's general manager told a group of season-ticket holders a few hours before the Mets played the Houston Astros on Sunday he wants to deal with contracts for Dickey and Wright this offseason even though the team holds options on each player for 2013. ''I fully expect that David...

Mike Piazza Bobblehead Day, Mets Murdered Row Lineup: Mets Lineup V. Astros - August 25, 2012

The Mets haven't scored more than two runs in seven straight games, and it doesn't look like that will be the case today when RA Dickey and the Mets take on the lowly Astros. Today will also be Mike Piazza Bobblehead Day at GHMP, and fans attending today's contest will receive the bobblehead of the beloved Mets catcher. The entire metsfan73 household will be attending...

Perfect Scenario For Announcing Wright’s Extension

In his most forceful comments to date, Mets GM Sandy Alderson, while speaking to season ticket holders yesterday expressed optimism about bringing back David Wright and R.A. Dickey. However, it must be noted optimism and guarantees are two different things. “I fully expect that David Wright and R.A. Dickey will be here not only next year, but long term,” Alderson said. “As...

Come On, The Houston Astros Have To Be Doing This On Purpose

Earlier this month, the Houston Astros committed what I consider to be the worst play in the history of professional baseball when they turned a sacrifice bunt into a Cirque du Soleil-like dance of futility. I describe it as, “the kind of thing people put into movies about bad baseball teams in the opening montage so you’ll feel happy for them when they stop squatting and farting...

N.L. Cy Young watch, August

After a hot July, the MLB season has now gone into August.  With the new Wild Card spots in play, more teams have hope coming into the stretch run.  And, with more playoff births, more aces are trying to pitch their teams into the postseason.  For the beginning of August, I’ve taken the list of Cy Young contenders down from ten to eight.  I am also looking more in-depth at...
