Photo by Michael BaronAs expected Dan Murphy has put u solid numbers in spring training, in 9 games, 22 at-bats he's hitting .273 with a .333 OBP, .273 Slugging pct. and a .605 OPS.

For those defending using Murphy as the starting 2B they general draw their comparison to Jeff Kent.  Like Murphy, Kent was in the line-up for his bat and his glove was often described as robotic.

But in drawing such a comparison what they fail to consider is the power Kent provided, in Murphy's best power year he hit 12 HRs. Kent hit 20 or more HRs is 13 of his 17 year career and 12 HRs was his worse mark aside from his rookie year.

You can justify a robotic fielder when they can hit for that much power and have a lifetime .290 BA.  Can you do the same for a guy hitting .273 and 10 less home runs.

I'm not sure if Murphy can even man the position without getting hurt, as chronicled by Amazin Ave. despite blowing out both knees Murphy continues to field in a manor that puts him at risk to get hurt again.  The Johan pick off play was actually the second time he lead with his knee while covering second, in addition he continues to **** routine plays ( as evident today) and has been slow on the turn for double play attempts.
