St. Louis Cardinals fans adore the "Secret Weapon." After a solid playing career in a Cardinals uniform, Jose Oquendo has been on the St. Louis Cardinals coaching staff since 1997. Most of that time, Oquendo served as the Cardinals third base coach and as an understudy to future Hall of Fame and former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.
Oquendo has put in his time, but has never landed a MLB managing gig.
Oquendo did manage Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic in both 2006 and 2009, but has never been able to secure a managerial position at the Major League level.
It is not as if Oquendo has not tried. The former middle-infielder, who played every position on the field during his career, has interviewed with the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and the New York Mets in the past, only to be overlooked by each organization. Oquendo even interviewed for the job left vacant by La Russa after last year's World Series win, but that job of course went to Mike ...

Cardinals dismiss bullpen coach
The St. Louis Cardinals won't renew the contract of bullpen coach Dyar Miller, the team announced Thursday. The rest of manager Mike Matheny's coaching staff will be offered an opportunity to stay, general manager John Mozeliak said. That includes Mark McGwire, Derek Lilliquist and Jose Oquendo. Mozeliak prefers to fill the bullpen position from within the organization...
St. Louis Mayor Takes Issue with Fans
For some reason, St. Louis Cardinals fans are known as being the best in the world. I'm not sure how the voting shook out, but if @BestFansStLouis is any indication...there needs to be a re-count.By now, you've seen what the Twitter account is all about, right? Basically, as Deadspin put it, "one brave soul is keeping tabs on the temporary insanity for us and retweeting...

After stunning NLCS exit, Cards try to regroup
ST. LOUIS (AP) Kyle Lohse got to bed at 5:30 a.m. after the St. Louis Cardinals' flight following a most unpleasant end to the NL championship series against the San Francisco Giants.
Fatigue only added to the aftershock of a spectacular nosedive as players cleaned out their lockers Tuesday at an empty stadium still adorned with bunting. The pitcher's mound and home plate...
Despite tough Game 7, Cards value Kozma
ST. LOUIS Baseball's higher forces have a wicked sense of humor. How else to explain shortstop Pete Kozma, the St. Louis Cardinals' King Clutch this October, becoming the victim of a funhouse sequence in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series?
Let's rewind to Monday night: In the bottom of the third inning, the San Francisco Giants led 2-0. Bases were loaded...
Five questions facing the Cards this offseason
The defending World Series champions were one win away from returning to the Fall Classic for a second straight year before suffering three consecutive losses to the San Francisco Giants this week.
And while the pain and disappointment continues to linger, thoughts quickly turn positive when the talk turns towards next season. The Cardinals will likely lose only starter Kyle Lohse...
Lohse preparing to move on from Cardinals
ST. LOUIS Kyle Lohse packed up his locker, shook some hands and said his goodbyes Tuesday afternoon in the Cardinals clubhouse at Busch Stadium.
But he had trouble walking out the door.
The pitcher almost certainly won't be back with the Cardinals next season. Set to cash in on a big payday in the free agent market this winter, the club likely will go with one of their younger...
Sports Superstitions Make Fans Feel Like Part Of The Game
It was evident the St. Louis Cardinals were headed back to the World Series. After an 8-3 win in Game 4 of the NLCS, admission was all but formally granted. The Redbirds had dominated the Giants across the diamond. The Sports Fan Journal’s Matt Whitener tweeted that the Cardinals were headed back to the Fall [...]The post Sports Superstitions Make Fans Feel Like Part Of The Game...

The Best of the 2012 NLCS In Jerseys
The 2012 St. Louis Cardinals won’t be world champions. It’s a total bummer, but the dream of 12 in ’12 is over (not to mention 13 in ’13, 14 in ’14, 15 in ’15, 16 in ’16…okay, you get the idea). But if the NLCS was any indication, Cardinals fans will always be number one [...]

Joe Buck Knows That People Think He Is Biased For The Cardinals, Doesn’t Care
If Ben Franklin were alive today, he’d probably smell awful and he’d have to agree that three things are certain in life – death, taxes and people hating ol’ biased Joe Buck. Sure enough, baseball fans complained to the highest heavens and lowest hells about his alleged love for the St. Louis Cardinals during last year’s World Series, and they absolutely ******* and moaned...
Choose Your Talking Points Carefully
Nope.
Not feeling better about Game 7 today. Not in the least. Hard to turn on SportsCenter this AM and hear them talk about... well, a ****** Monday Night Football game. But STILL. They COULD have talked about Game 7 and that would have been the PITTS.
Listen, before we become fully entrenched in our talking points over the next couple of days, let's talk about...
