Found July 31, 2012 on Boston's Bettah:

A couple years ago, the Boston Red Sox finally acquired a long sought out catching prospect in Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Once a top prospect, Salty had lost much of his value after a couple years of bouncing back and forth between the major leagues and the minor leagues and completely losing his ability to catch at one point. The Red Sox reclaimed him and he has been a fairly good part of the Red Sox line-up this season.

Now there is talk that they might trade him.

The idea is to move Salty, call up catching prospect Ryan Lavernway and begin getting younger, but it still is a bit of a shocker. The Sox spent so much time trying to acquire Saltalamacchia and he has finally become a serviceable catcher and probably should have been an all-star this year. In addition, the Boston Red Sox had been talking about trading back-up catcher Kelly Shoppach for quite some time.

On a fairly slow trade deadline day, this certainly would be a shocker of a move by the Boston Red Sox. We’ll break it down if it happens.

Sox looked to deal Beckett, Ellsbury, and Shoppach to Rangers

The trade deadline ended without a bang from the Red Sox. The biggest deal of the day for the Sox was the acquisition of Craig Breslow for Albers and Podsednik. We all waited for something to happen with Josh Beckett and a lot of us were bummed to find out he would be on this team for the foreseeable future. This morning, WEEI's Rob Bradford wrote that the Red Sox looked to deal...

Red Sox OF Sweeney punches door, hurts hand

Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney hurt his left hand after punching a door and had to leave the Boston's victory over Detroit in the ninth inning Monday night. Manager Bobby Valentine said after the game that Sweeney was taken out for a defensive replacement because he had done something to his hand in his last at-bat and couldn't throw. Sweeney, however, said following the...

Beckett leaves game with injury

Josh Beckett has left the Boston Red Sox game in the third inning with an apparent lower back injury. Beckett motioned for the trainer to come to the mound after walking Miguel Cabrera to force in the first run Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers. His lower left back was checked and Beckett walked slowly off the mound. He was replaced with two outs by Clayton Mortensen, who...

Ryan Sweeney Apologizes to Fans for Punching Wall, Insists It Wasn't Intentional

Ryan Sweeney made a very, very costly mistake on Monday night. The Red Sox outfielder fractured a finger after punching a dugout wall during the Red Sox' win over the Tigers at Fenway Park, and he now may be out for up to two months. On Tuesday, the outfielder apologized. He did so via Twitter. Sweeney's name had been coming up in trade talks in recent weeks, but that'...

Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia Leading the Way as Red Sox Stay Hot Against Tigers

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. A little trip to New York seemed to help the Red Sox find their mojo, and they've carried it back to Fenway Park. Coming off their third win in a row, the Red Sox will look to ride the hot...

Ciriaco comes through for Red Sox again

Infielder Pedro Ciriaco did it again. Ciriaco delivered the game-winning hit Sunday night, a fisted blooper into shallow right field to score Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the 10th inning and give the Red Sox a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. But Ciriaco's presence in the lineup at shortstop had little to do with his recent hot streak or his go-ahead RBI triple in the ninth inning...

Beckett scratched from Sunday start

Josh Beckett has been scratched by the Boston Red Sox from his scheduled start Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. Beckett left Tuesday night's game against Detroit after 2 2/3 innings because of a back spasm. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Friday that he didn't think the right-hander will go on the disabled list. Beckett is 5-9 with a 4.54 ERA in 18 starts this season...

Red Sox Fans Anxious but Hopeful About Team's Future Despite Quiet Trade Deadline (Video)

The Red Sox had a relatively quiet trade deadline, but that doesn't mean the team is going to pack it in the rest of the way. In fact, the team might actually be gearing up for a significant run at the playoffs following July 31, but not from the usual strategy of bringing in a big name to shake up the clubhouse. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette asked our Twitter followers for...

Recap: Sox beat Tigers 7-3 behind Buchholz's strong outing

Maybe this is the start of the good streak that Bobby Valentine (and the rest of us) have been waiting for? All things are looking better for the Sox who managed to get their third win in four games as the Red Sox beat the Tigers, 7-3. It was thanks in large part to Clay Buchholz, as he was able to tame the potent Tigers offense, allowing five hits & three runs (two of them...

Indians get Anderson from Red Sox for Wright

BOSTON (AP) -- The Red Sox acquired right-handed knuckleballer Steven Wright from the Cleveland Indians for first baseman Lars Anderson on Tuesday. Wright was 9-6 with a 2.49 ERA at Double-A Akron. Boston, which had knuckleballer Tim Wakefield in its rotation for many years, assigned Wright to Double-A Portland. The 27-year-old Wright has never pitched in the majors. In six minor...

Trading Deadline Live Blog

Hi folks, I’ll be here all day updating this post with the latest traded deadline news so check back early and often.  It should be an eventful day as the Red Sox have probably played themselves back into a “buyers” label over the past 4 days but they also have a surplus of players in key positions which puts them in a position to sell as well.  Here’s a primer for what...

Report: Red Sox Among Teams Inquiring About Rafael Betancourt

The Red Sox bullpen has been a bright spot amidst the team's up-and-down season, but that's not stopping the club from doing its homework on relievers. The Sox are among the teams inquiring about Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan. The Rangers, Braves and Blue Jays are reportedly also checking in on the right-hander. Betancourt...
