SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams interviewed for the Colorado Rockies managerial position on Monday and is one of two finalists for the job, according to the Denver Post. Walt Weiss was identified as the other finalist. It was a very good baseball conversation. They had a lot of questions, so I tried to answer them as best I could, Williams said Tuesday. They said they would talk about it internally and then get back to me. I dont know what that time frame is. Well see. Williams, a five-time All-Star, met with Colorado owner Dick Monfort and general manager Dan ODowd on Monday. The Rockies did not give Williams a timetable but are expected to make a final decision shortly, perhaps as early as the major league general managers meetings in Indian Wells, Calif., that begin Wednesday. Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos also has spoken to Williams about a possible interview for the Blue Jays' managerial vacancy, although an interivew likely will not occur until after the winter meetings. The Blue Jays are looking at a number of candidates. Williams had a general talk about philosophy with Rockies assistant general manager Bill Geivett early last week, but the sides talked more specifically about the Rockies personnel and issues Monday. Williams long-term familiarity with the NL West is a selling point. He has coached in the division the last three years with the D-backs and spent most of his playing career in the division with San Francisco and the D-backs. We discussed it. I let them know I feel confident with knowing the West, certainly coaching within the division over the last three years, said Williams, who returned on Monday night and was back at work managing the Arizona Fall League Salt River Rafters on Tuesday night. "They are looking for somebody who can lead the organization and create a path back to winning. I think it went really well. I enjoyed the process of meeting them. The Rockies have interviewed Williams, Weiss, Jason Giambi and bench coach Tom Runnels for the job vacated when Jim Tracy resigned on Oct. 7 after a franchise-worst 98-loss season. Weiss, a 14-year major league veteran, played four seasons with Colorado and was the starting shortstop on their 1995 NL West title team.Follow Jack Magruder on Twitter
