MINNEAPOLIS Josh Willingham spent just one season in Oakland, but he set a career high with 29 home runs last year with the Athletics. One year later, Willingham is on pace to surpass that total with the Minnesota Twins, and he's taking advantage of his former team in the process. After hitting two home runs in Friday's loss to Oakland, Willingham hit another in Saturday's 9-3 loss at Target Field, giving him 22 on the season. His solo homer led off the eighth inning as he took A's reliever Jordan Norberto deep to straightaway center field. Willingham's homer hit high off the batter's eye and was estimated at 436 feet -- the longest of the six combined home runs between Minnesota and Oakland on Saturday. Most of Willingham's home runs this year have been pulled to left or left-center field, but he showed Saturday that he has the power to clear the fences in center field as well. According to baseball-reference.com, Saturday's homer was the fifth to straightaway center hit by Willingham this year. The rest were hit to left or left-center. "He's a pull hitter. He jerks the ball. That's the probably friendliest area for home runs," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said prior to Saturday's game. "But he's not afraid to go to center field. He's not afraid to go to left-center field. He's just a strong young man. He's one of those pull guys. He's kind of entertaining to watch. He's got a chance every time he walks up there because he's so damn strong." Five of Willingham's team-high 22 homers have come against Oakland, the most against any team this season. He's hit four against the Angels. Willingham hit his first two home runs against Oakland in a late-May series against the A's. He took Brian Fuentes deep for a walk-off homer back on May 29, a three-run shot that gave Minnesota a 3-2 win. The next day, he homered off Tyson Ross in the bottom of the fifth inning. His two-run blast put the Twins up 4-0. According to the Twins, Willingham entered Saturday's game with the most home runs so far in July, tied with Colorado's Tyler Colvin. Willingham added to that by beating up on his former team once again. He'll get one more chance at his old squad Sunday against right-hander Jarrod Parker, and again in August when the Twins travel to Oakland for a three-game series. By then, Willingham could well have surpassed his home run total from a year ago. Capps makes first appearance since DL stint: Twins closer Matt Capps was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, but he didn't see his first action until Saturday. Capps pitched a perfect eighth inning Saturday against Oakland, striking out Brandon Inge in the process. Capps was sidelined with inflammation in his right shoulder and made two one-inning appearances with Class-A Fort Myers during a rehab assignment. He said after Saturday's game that his shoulder felt fine after throwing 11 pitches. "I felt pretty good. A little bit of jitters that first time out there, but I felt good," said Capps, whose last outing with the Twins prior to Saturday came on June 23 in Cincinnati. "It was nice to get that first one under the belt. The breaking ball and off-speed stuff felt good, and I was down with the fastball. That's kind of what I want. All in all, for the first time back out there in three weeks, I'm pretty happy with it." Now the question is when Capps will be inserted back into the closer's role. He entered in a low-pressure situation Saturday as the Twins trailed 8-2. He's hoping he can be back in the ninth-inning role soon. "Obviously, the competitive side in me wants to get right back onto the saddle," Capps said. ". . . (Pitching coach Rick Anderson) and Gardy kind of said they were going to ease me back into it. I don't know if there will be another situation like this before they really throw me into the ninth inning or what the deal will be. Hopefully we get out there tomorrow in a win." Catcher's relationship with pitcher instrumental

MINNEAPOLIS After Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano struck out a career-high 15 batters Friday against Oakland, he credited part of it to being on the same page as catcher Drew Butera. Statistically speaking, there's something to that. Liriano has indeed pitched better with Butera behind the plate this season compared to when Joe Mauer or Ryan Doumit catches. Liriano has...

Pavano must pace himself for return

MINNEAPOLIS Since becoming a member of the Minnesota Twins late in the 2009 season, Carl Pavano has been an innings-eater. The 14-year veteran pitched over 220 innings in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. No matter how the rest of the rotation was pitching at the time, the Twins could count on Pavano to pitch deep into games. That hasn't been the case in 2012, and no one is more...

Capps returns, ready for save situation

MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota Twins closer Matt Capps rejoined his team Friday after spending time on the 15-day disabled list. But manager Ron Gardenhire said the plan is to ease Capps back into the closer's role. "We'll put him in a couple of different situations," Gardenhire said before Friday's game against Oakland at Target Field. "This is the big leagues...

Twins HOF induction 'a perfect day' for Pascual

MINNEAPOLIS Camilo Pascual's curveball was a big reason he led the American League in strikeouts for three straight seasons during his career. And on Saturday, that curveball helped Pascual earn a spot in the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame. Pascual, a native of Havana, Cuba, became the 24th member inducted into the team's Hall of Fame prior to Saturday's game at Target...

Liriano's 15 K's not enough to beat A's

MINNEAPOLIS Francisco Liriano has shown throughout his career that he can be a dominating pitcher. But Friday's outing may have been Liriano's most dominant start to date. The Twins left-hander fanned a career-high 15 batters Friday against Oakland, baffling Athletics hitters for eight innings. Yet one rough inning was all it took for Liriano and the Twins to come away...

Twins are happy to see A's leave town

MINNEAPOLIS The last time the Minnesota Twins faced the Oakland Athletics, Minnesota emerged with a three-game sweep of the A's at Target Field. But Oakland is a much-improved team since that late-May series, as the Twins found out the hard way this weekend. Minnesota dropped Sunday's series finale by a 9-4 final score as Oakland completed a three-game sweep of the Twins...

Twins' Liriano fans 15 in loss to A's

Minnesota Twins starter Francisco Liriano was cruising through the Oakland Athletics lineup Friday, looking as dominant as he did when he threw a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox last season. Then, Oakland's Johnny Gomes deposited his one bad pitch into the second deck in left field for a grand slam. In past cases, it would have been the beginning of the end for the enigmatic...

Gomes' grand slam power A's over Liriano, Twins

Jonny Gomes' grand slam helped the Oakland Athletics overcome a career-high 15 strikeouts from Francisco Liriano and beat the Minnesota Twins 6-3 on Friday. Liriano's 15 strikeouts were the second most in Twins' history and most since Johan Santana fanned 17 Texas batters at the Metrodome on Aug. 19, 2007. Josh Willingham hit two home runs for Minnesota which has lost...

Twins Get Curb Stomped By A’s Last Night, 999-3!

(1.) How many hits did it take to get 999 runs? (2.) At what point did the Twins go to position players as to save the bullpen for today’s game? (3.) Will Ron Gardenhire lose his job over this embarrassing loss? Helluva fantasy baseball night. (via @johnharpster) Filed under: Baseball

Francisco Liriano strikes out 15 in loss

Francisco Liriano struck out a career high 15 batters on Friday night against the Oakland Athletics, but failed to win the game after giving up a grand slam to Jonny Gomes. The 15 batters fanned by Liriano on Friday was the second most in Twins’ history, two behind Johan Santana’s record 17 strikeouts in 2007 against the Texas Rangers. Liriano recorded ten straight outs to start...

Orioles-Twins Preview

It's been nearly 11 months since the last time the Baltimore Orioles visited Minnesota, and that's probably just fine with the Twins. Jim Thome's final game in a Twins uniform was the same day as the Orioles' last visit, but he's made frequent trips back to haunt Minnesota. Losers of 10 of 14 overall, Thome and the Orioles look to get well Monday night when...
