TEAMS: Minnesota Twins
Just two days remain before the Minnesota Twins begin full team workouts at their spring training facilities in Fort Myers, Fla. As of Wednesday, all but two position players have reported to camp. The Twins, a team that was injured often last season, have had a few dings early on but nothing serious.
FOXSportsNorth.com will track reports from the news outlets already in Florida until March 4, when Tyler Mason will begin covering the team in Fort Myers. A look at some of Wednesday's storylines from camp:
Willingham, Burroughs report: Two more Twins position players reported to Fort Myers on Wednesday, meaning only two have not yet shown up at camp. Making their way to Fort Myers on Wednesday were outfielder Josh Willingham and third baseman Sean Burroughs, according to reports.
The only two players yet to report are first baseman Justin Morneau and outfielder Oswaldo Arcia.
Willingham was signed this offseason after hitting a career-high 29 home runs with Oakland last year. The 33-year-old Willingham has spent most of his career as a left fielder, but he is expected to be the Twins' every-day right fielder, a notion that manager Ron Gardenhire confirmed Wednesday, according to the Pioneer Press.
"We're going to try to figure this out in spring training," Gardenhire told the Pioneer Press in regards to Willingham. "We're going to start out this way, and if it looks like it's working OK and he's getting used to that, he'll be out in right field. But if it looks like he's not comfortable in right field, I know the other guys can do it for a fact."
Burroughs signed a minor league contract with Minnesota this offseason. He played 78 games with Arizona in 2011. Prior to that, he didn't play in the majors since 2006 due in part to issues with substance abuse.
"I'm going show up and play hard, do what they want me to do," Burroughs told MLB.com. "I think I'll have more versatility this year playing different positions, and I'll try to fill in at different spots. I'll just go out there and compete. It's a fun time of the season right now, just showing up and meeting new teammates and smelling that fresh-cut grass. I'm looking forward to it."
Good news on Hughes' MRI: Twins infielder Luke Hughes injured his shoulder while playing winter ball in his native Australia, but a second MRI showed no structural damage, only inflammation, according to multiple reports.
The 27-year-old Hughes appeared in 96 games last season, splitting time between first base, second base and third base. This is an important spring training for Hughes, as he is out of minor league options. After batting .223 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 287 at-bats last season with the Twins, Hughes will be fighting for a roster spot out of camp this spring.
"I understand what's going on here," Hughes told 1500 ESPN. "I've been in this organization for 10 years. This is all I know as a player."
Doumit will be Twins' DH: Gardenhire told reporters Wednesday that free agent acquisition Ryan Doumit will be used as the team's primary designated hitter. Doumit, who spent his entire career with Pittsburgh before signing with Minnesota this offseason, is capable of playing first base, outfield and catcher. While Doumit's versatility is an asset, Gardenhire wants to keep his bat in the lineup.
"I look at the DH more for Doumit than I do anything else right now," Gardenhire said, according to MLB.com. "I want to keep his bat in there right now. If we started today, Doumit would be my DH. But there's always options of putting Doumit behind the plate and having somebody else DH."
Doumit batted .303 with a .353 on-base percentage in 77 games last season with the Pirates. He also hit eight homers and drove in 30 runs in 218 at-bats.

MLB Preview 2012: The Minnesota Twins
Just about a year ago, I extolled the joys of Target Field and pointed out that the Minnesota Twins finish to 2010 was better than expected. 2011 was going to be a different year. When I said different, I didn’t mean a 63-99 season. Last year was bad, just all around bad. It started out bad in spring training when Joe Mauer didn’t catch a game until mid-March, and then went downhill...
