Joba Chamberlain's return from the disabled list didn't start out very well, as the reliever posted a 10.57 ERA over his first nine appearances, allowing runs in all but three of them.

However, Chamberlain seems to be getting his legs underneath him, giving the New York Yankees a potential weapon in the late innings down the stretch.

Chamberlain entered Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth inning, trying to stop the bleeding after Freddy Garcia had given up three runs, turning a 5-0 Yankees lead into a two-run game.

With a runner at first base and one out, Chamberlain was handed the task of setting down power threats Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis, and he responded by striking out both sluggers.

"There's no low-leverage from this point out; you play this game to be in tight situations," Chamberlain said. "You play this game to be the best, and understand what you have to do. Especially with this lineup, the way they're swinging the bat, they can change the game with one swing."

Chamberlain earned the win -- his first since May 2, 2011 -- while striking out four batters, only the third time he's ever done that in a relief appearance. With several of the Yankees' relievers struggling of late, Chamberlain's re-emergence may give manager Joe Girardi another arm to trust in a tight spot.

"We think Joba's last three outings have really taken a step in the right direction," Girardi said. "We don't have a lot of time, so if you're going to move up the food chain, you move up pretty quick this time of year."
