TEAMS: Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates
Pirates’ players and friends in winter league action on Thursday:
DOMINICAN LEAGUE
Gigantes del Cibao 6, Aguilas Cibaenas 4
A 4-run 5th inning made the difference for Los Gigantes. Both teams scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning — Los Gigantes with a walk, three singles, and a ground out double play; and Los Aguilas on a solo homer and a walk and two singles. The scoring in the 5th began with a pair of doubles, and with two outs, Los Gigantes scored 3 more runs on two walks, a single, a fielding error by RF Brandon Moss, and another RBI single. Moss’s grounder that turned into a fielding error brought in a run in the 7th, and another run scored with a walk, a single, and another error. Moss also had a single in the 1st inning but did not score.
PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE
Indios de Mayaguez 4, Leones de Ponce 1
Los Indios posted 14 hits, though they left 10 runners on base. A 3-run homer began the scoring for Los Indios in the top of the 1st, and they added another run in the 7th on a single, a double, and a sacrifice fly. Los Leones scored their only run, which was unearned, in the 6th inning. With Justin Thomas on the mound for Los Indios, Los Leones put a runner on base with a single and a fielding error. Another single and a sacrifice fly brought in the run. Thomas had entered the game in the 5th inning when starter Jon Huber injured his hand. With one out, Thomas gave up a walk and a single, but ended the inning with a double play. He also began the 7th inning, with a single and a ground out, then was relieved. The win gives Mayaguez a 3-2 win of the 5-game series.
VENEZUELAN LEAGUE
Tigres de Aragua 6, Navegantes del Magallanes 0
Los Tigres did all of their scoring with home runs in this game. CF Jonel Pacheco began the fun with a solo homer in the 3rd. Pacheco walked in the 5th, and scored on the 2-run homer. Pinch hitter Hector Gimenez singled for Los Tigres and pinch hitter Jorge Cortes was intentionally walked in the 7th inning. Then the third pinch hitter of the inning, who replaced Pacheco, smacked a 3-run homer. Wil Ledezma pitched to 4 batters for Los Tigres — 3 outs and a single. Jean Machi pitched the bottom of the 9th for Los Navegantes, allowing only a single.
Caribes de Anzoategui 4, Tiburones de La Guaira 1 (in the 6th inning)
This one is still underway, but so far CF Gorkys Hernandez has singled and scored twice.
