Just the Dominican and Venezuelan Leagues were playing tonight, with a few Pirates’ players and friends

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Aguilas Cibaenas  3,  Tigres del Licey  1

3B Yamaico Navarro went 2-for-3, but his Tigres managed only 3 other hits in the game.  Los Tigres scored their only run in the bottom of the 1st, on two singles, including one by 2B Anderson Hernandez, and an RBI double.  C Ronny Paulino flied out to right field, hoping for a sacrifice fly, but RF Brandon Moss’s throw in to the plate was right on target, and Hernandez was thrown out at the plate.  Los Aguilas tied the score in the top of the 3rd, with a single, a walk, and an RBI single by Moss.  A single, a stolen base, and an RBI single gave Los Aguilas the lead in the 5th inning.  A hit batter and a walk to Moss loaded the bases in that inning, but all three were left on base.  Los Aguilas added an insurance run in the top of the 9th, with three singles.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Aguilas del Zulia  6,  Tigres de Aragua  2

Los Aguilas won their first game of this round-robin playoff series, for a 1-11 tournament record.  Los Aguilas’ first run was forced in, after a double, a single, a walk to C Carlos Maldonado, and another walk to drive in the run.  The next batter blasted a grand slam, to give Los Aguilas a lead they would not give up.  Two singles, a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly added another run for Los Aguilas in the 4th.  Los Tigres also scored in the 4th, on a walk and two singles.  1B Hector Gimenez led off the 6th inning with a single for Los Tigres.  He moved to second on a walk and to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly.  Wil Ledezma pitched to 4 batters for Los Tigres, and retired all of them, with 3 strikeouts.  Gimenez also doubled in the 1st inning, but was left stranded.  CF Jorge Cortes singled in the 7th and again in the 9th, but did not score.

Hector Gimenez signed a minor league contract with the White Sox yesterday.  Another former Pirate farmhand, pitcher Jimmy Barthmaier signed a minor league contract with the Nationals.
