Looking at Pirates’ players and friends in winter league play….

MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE

Venados de Mazatlan  16,  Tomateros de Culiacan  2

Culiacan had the early lead with 2 runs in the 2nd inning.  Former Pirate LF Luis Cruz walked and scored in that inning.  But it was all Mazatlan after that.  A sacrifice fly and a 2-run homer gave Los Venados a 3-2 lead in the 3rd.  All was quiet until the 7th, when two walks and a single loaded the bases for RF Rogelio Noris.  Noris, the hometown hero, blasted a grand slam over the center field wall for a 7-2 lead.  Mazatlan scored twice more in that inning.  Noris walked and scored in the 4-run 8th, and Los Venados added 3 more runs in the top of the 9th.

VENZUELAN LEAGUE  — season openers

Navegantes de Magallanes  14,  Aguilas de Zulia  8

A total of 29 hits in this game, and 20 of them by Los Navegantes, who scored 6 runs in the 4th and 5 runs in the 7th.  Zulia countered with 3 runs in the 5th and 5 in the 8th.  Diego Moreno pitched the top of the 9th for Los Aguilas, and kept Magallanes from scoring in that frame.  He gave up a walk and a single, but ended the inning with a double play.

Tigres de Aragua  2,  Cardenales de Lara

Former Pirate farmhand 1B Hector Gimenez came to the plate in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied at 1-1 and two outs.  He gave Aragua the win with a solo home run.  LF Lastings Milledge and C Raul Chavez were both hitless, and pinch-hitter Jorge Cortes was also hitless.

Tiburones de La Guaira  6,  Caribes de Anzoategui  3

CF Gorkys Hernandez went 0-for-5 for Los Caribes, who scored all of their runs in the 5th inning, with two singles and two doubles. Hernandez was hitting in the lead-off position, as he had in Indianapolis this year.

Why Aren’t the Pirates Keeping Paul Maholm?

It seems that every year there is a big story in the off-season that always leads to the same result.  The Pittsburgh Pirates make a move, the move is unfavorable to the fan base, and the immediate reaction is to speculate on what this means for the remainder of the off-season.  Usually the thought is “the Pirates will do nothing, and will go in to the following season with...

The Last Pitch Paul Maholm Ever Threw as a Pirate

Now that Paul Maholm is officially not getting a new deal from the Pirates this offseason, it's time to start thinking about him in the past tense. Maholm had a pretty solid career for the Pirates, and was one of our best players over the last five years (although that is hardly saying anything). August 17, 2011 was the last start Maholm made for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and...

This Date in Pirates History: October 13

On this date in 1960 the Pirates won game seven of the World Series at Forbes Field by a 10-9 score over the New York Yankees on a walk-off home run from Bill Mazeroski. The win gave the Pirates their third World Series title overall and first one in 35 years.  Mazeroski scores the series winning run The Pirates took an early 2-0 lead in the game on a home run by Rocky Nelson in...

This Date in Pirates History: October 14

On this date in both 1971 and 1979, the Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles in game five of the World Series. Both games occurred at Three Rivers Stadium but under different circumstances. In 1971 the series was tied two games apiece. The Pirates went with Nelson Briles for his first start of the series while the winner of game one, Dave McNally, took the mound for the Orioles...

AFL Recap 10/14: Gerrit Cole’s Debut

Cole made his AFL debut today. Gerrit Cole, the first overall pick in the 2011 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, made his Arizona Fall League debut this afternoon against the Surprise Saguaros.   Cole started off strong, with two perfect innings, but fell apart in the third, finishing with three runs allowed on three hits in 2.1 innings, along with a walk and two strikeouts. Cole...

Maholm set to test free agency

The Pittsburgh Pirates have indicated that they will probably not be picking up Paul Maholm’s $9.75 million team option for 2012. Maholm will test the free agent market this offseason.

Pirates' Veras picked for Taiwan series

Pirates reliever Jose Veras has been selected for the Major League Baseball All-Stars team that will travel to Taiwan to compete against the Chinese Taipei national team. The exhibition series will feature five games in three Taiwanese cities.

Morton has hip surgery

Pitcher Charlie Morton had surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip and might not be ready for the start of the 2012 season, the Pirates announced Tuesday. But Morton said he hopes to be ready for opening day. "That's what I'm shooting for and that's what I'm hoping for," he said. "The physical therapist here knows that. The surgeon here knows that.

Pirates will decline Paul Maholm's option

Well, so much for that. The Pirates are going to decline Maholm's team option for $9.75 million and the pitcher says he's going to "test free agency." I sincerely doubt he'll be back. Maholm's not Sandy Koufax or anything, but unless Neal Huntington has some serious tricks up his sleeve, the 2012 Pirate rotation is going to be the biggest Disaster Area since Kakrafoon.

Gerrit Cole Makes His AFL Debut Tomorrow

Jonathan Mayo reports that Gerrit Cole will make his Arizona Fall League debut Friday for the Mesa Solar Sox.  The Pittsburgh Pirates held Cole back in the instructional leagues to make a few more starts before sending him to the AFL.  He arrived in Arizona earlier this week, and is listed as the probable starter for tomorrow’s game.

Pirates Will Decline Option For Paul Maholm

The Pirates have decided to decline their 2012 option for Paul Maholm, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (on Twitter). The left-hander would have cost $9.75MM in 2012.

What are the Pirates trying to do in 2012?

For a long time, it was easy to know what the Pirates' strategy should be for every off-season: don't sign old guys that will block young guys, try to find bargains to plug the remaining holes, and don't worry about the next season's win total because 1.) the fans were already worn down and apathetic from so many years of losing and probably wouldn't get worse...

Pirates starter Morton undergoes hip surgery

Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton could miss Opening Day after having surgery this week to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.
