In the Dominican, Gregory Polanco had a quiet night compared to what he did in his first five games. He went 1-for-4 on Friday night, scoring a run and extending his hit streak to six games. Polanco is 11-for-24 so far. De Jesus will play in Puerto Rico this Winter In that same game, Matt Hague had his five game hitting streak snapped. He went 0-for-4, dropping his average down to .304 through 23 AB’s. For the Gigantes del Cibao, Oscar Tejeda and Carlos Paulino both were in the starting lineup. Neither picked up a hit in their team’s 2-1 win, though they each reached base via walk. Tejeda was at second base and he made an error. He first couple starts came in the outfield. Last season, De Jesus won the PWL batting title with a .364 average. There is an interesting name in the Nicaraguan Winter League for the Pirates. Adolfo Flores was signed by the Pirates in 2011, though he has never pitched in a game. He is a 20-year-old righty that can throw mid-90′s, but he has had some personal issues and was suspended for leaving the team. He is from Nicaragua and will play for the Tigres de Chinandega.

There and back again: What do the Pirates need to do this winter?

When looking back on the Pittsburgh Pirates' 2013 season and ahead to their 2014 season, there's just one question to ask: How did the Pirates get to 94 wins in 2013 and what do they need to do to get back and beyond in 2014? In the immediate aftermath of the Pirates' loss, there was a lot of goodwill surrounding the Pirates. The general sentiment was that the Pirates...

While some other Pittsburgh Pirates players are doing well early on in the Winter League season, none of them can match Gregory Polanco. Pirates’ Top First Base Target Should Be James Loney

The Pittsburgh Pirates‘ biggest need in the offseason is first base. Garrett Jones will likely be non-tendered, Gaby Sanchez may or may not be back, and Justin Morneau isn’t worth bringing back unless there aren’t any better options. Sanchez is a good player, but only against left-handed pitching. If the Pirates plan on keeping Sanchez to put him in a platoon, then they need...

First Pitch: What Would the Pirates Do?

Last night I wrote about how the Tampa Bay Rays were the model franchise in baseball. In the comments, a few people talked about how the Pirates should strive to be the model franchise. This is definitely true. I mention the Rays so often because they’ve been the most successful small market team. They’ve done this by using small market strategies, such as valuing young players...
