In Winter League action from last night in Puerto Rico, Ivan DeJesus had four hits, including his third home run and eleventh double, as his team lost 11-9 in 15 innings. He drove in three runs and scored three times, including the game tying run in the bottom of the ninth. DeJesus batted lead-off and played second base, where he also made his fifth error of the season. He is now hitting .353 through 34 games. He leads the league in hits with 47 and his .908 OPS ranks third. On the other side of the field during the same game, Benji Gonzalez went 2-for-6, collecting a single and a double, which was his first extra-base hit of the Winter league season. Gonzalez also scored a run. He was replaced for a pinch-hitter in the 14th inning. In playoff action from the Dominican, Felix Pie hit a ninth inning home run that accounted for his team’s only run in a 3-1 loss. Pie went 1-for-4, while Alex Valdez went 0-for-4 batting directly behind Pie in the lineup. Last night marked the beginning of the DWL playoffs. Check this link for a list of teams and Pirates players involved in the DWL playoffs. In Venezuela, Darren Ford went 1-for-5 in his second game since coming back from a month long break. He has a .279/.353/.371 line through 33 games. In Australian League action from today, Wilson Lee allowed the winning run to score in Adelaide’s 3-2 loss. Lee came on in the bottom of the eighth with the score tied and a man on first base with two outs. He threw a wild pitch, then allowed a run-scoring double, before retiring the side on a fly out to center field. Since throwing 1.2 scoreless innings in his debut, Lee had struggled in each of his four subsequent outings. Stefan Welch was the only Pirates player in the Adelaide lineup. He went 2-for-4, with two singles. For the Perth Heat, Sam Kennelly went 0-for-4, before being pinch-hit for in the 12th inning. Kennelly played third base, where he made his second error of the season, a 12th inning throwing error that eventually led to the winning run to be scored. Kennelly handled all three previous chances in the game cleanly.
