TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins
As we continue through our list of thirty teams we start the review process from the winter meetings. Today is always a sad day for die hard baseball fans. It’s like the day after Christmas when you realize it will be another year until the next one. Otherwise, teams that went on benders (Angels and Marlins) may wake up with a hangover.
The Pirates have been steadily improving under Neal Huntington. He proves the point that you don’t need a lot money to be competitive. You just need competent management. He didn’t add a lot of big names so far this offseason, but when you look up you discover he got quite a bit done.
Infield
His first move in the offseason was still his best move. He stole Clint Barmes from the Houston Astros with a two-year contract. Barmes isn’t the kind of shortstop that makes you forget any of the all-time greats. Yet, when you look up at the end of the year, he has put up fielding numbers commensurate with a Gold Glover. Plus, he’l...

In a vacuum, I like the Pittsburgh Pirates’ free agent addition of SP Erik Bedard a lot. Despite his age (33) and injury history, Bedard instantly becomes the only pitcher in the rotation capable of striking out nearly a batter an inning- a vital barometer for consistent MLB success.
Outside of the vacuum, I believe the...
Rule 5 Draft: Pirates pick Gustavo Nunez from Tigers, lose Brett Lorin
As it turns out, the Pirates released Ross Ohlendorf last night to create a space on the roster to make a Rule 5 pick today, not to make room for Yamaico Navarro. The roster spot for Navarro will apparently be cleared sometime this afternoon. The draft is in about five minutes. I'm busy this morning, but I'll try to get this post updated as quickly as I can. Until then, you...
Pirates sign Erik Bedard to 1-year deal
The Pirates finally seem to be getting in the swing of things as they inked LHP Erik Bedard to a 1-year contract worth $4.5 million. It is a relatively low risk, high reward situation in that IF Bedard can stay healthy (and that is a big if), he has shown he is still very capable of pitching at a high level.
Bedard started 24 games last year as he hit the 20 game mark for the first...
This Date in Pirates History: December 9
On this date in 1980 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded pitcher Bert Blyleven and catcher Manny Sanguillen to the Cleveland Indians for catcher Gary Alexander and pitchers Victor Cruz, Bob Owchinko and Rafael Vasquez. Blyleven was the key piece to the deal, he was unhappy in Pittsburgh, where he went 34-28 over three seasons while helping them win the 1979 WS. For the Indians he went...
Bedard's Bonuses
I was reading Jennifer Langosch's post today about Erik Bedard's incentives in his contract and I couldn't help but laugh. Apparently Bedard gets an extra $100,000 if he wins the World Series MVP award. He gets an additional $25,000 for winning the MVP award of either of the playoff series before the World Series.I understand you never want to show complete distrust in...
Pirates Pick Gustavo Nunez In Rule V, Lose Brett Lorin
In yet another head-scratcher your Pittsburgh Pirates selected SS Gustavo Nunez in the Rule V draft. For the Pirates to keep Nunez he will have to spend the season with the big club. That presents a bit of a problem because Nunez has played a whopping 34 games at Double A, his highest level. Even [...]
Winter Mtgs: Hurdle on Watson
Tony Watson, who made large strides while on the mound at the University of Nebraska, has made a few more- this time at the major league level with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Clint Hurdle gives his thoughts on how Watson has dealt with the transition, and what he expects of him heading into 2012.
Now that's what I call roster turnover
With the Winter Meetings wrapping up now that the Rule 5 draft is over, we can probably assume that the Pirates are dont making moves, at least for the next few days. So, for now, let's take a breath and count the players that the Pirates have added to the 40-man roster since the regular season ended:
Erik Bedard
Jeremy Hefner
Rudy Owens
Duke Welker
Justin Wilson
Rod Barajas...
Pirates acquire Yamaico Navarro from Royals for Brooks Pounders
When the news broke this afternoon that the Pirates were no longer in on Wilson Betemit and that they'd made their roster moves to accomodate Erik Bedard and Nate McLouth without releasing Ross Ohlendorf, my gut feeling was that it was a sign that there was another move in the offing. It turns out that was a good instinct: the Pirates traded Brooks Pounders and Diego Goris tonight...
Lee declines arbitration, Ohlendorf released
DALLAS -- The Pirates released Ross Ohlendorf late Wednesday night, around the same time they learned that Derrek Lee declined their offer of salary arbitration;
Plan B at 1B comes to light for Pirates
DALLAS -- As of late Wednesday, the Pirates had not heard from Derrek Lee, but indications were strong the first baseman would decline the team's arbitration invitation. He had until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, at which point he would become a free agent.
