The St. Louis Cardinals were dealt a blow as they broke spring training camp in 2013. Their closer, Jason Motte, was injured. The early weeks of the season unveiled that the injury was not getting better and, pending a re-evaluation, Motte may require season ending surgery. Compounding the issue, Mitchell Boggs proved to be ineffective after inheriting the role and showcased an inability to nail down the all-important 27th out. The bullpen in St. Louis has proven to be loaded with outstanding arms leading up to the 9th inning but decidedly bare of arms capable of truly closing games. There are options, some of which have been explored, some of which have been rumored, and some of which are a bit outside the box. Edward Mujica - The obvious option, primarily because of his recent success in the role for the team. Mujica successfully closed down all three games in the recent series against the Washington Nationals and seems to be settling into the role quite well. His success in that...

With bullpen struggling, Cardinals are starting to consider other (internal) options.

With the Cardinals closer questions apparently being answered by Edward Mujica, who has converted all 3 of his save chances, the Cards are still looking to shore up the rest of their bullpen. As of today, the Cardinals have a bullpen ERA of 5.37, last in the majors.  Most of this can be attributed to Mitchell Boggs, who struggled when placed in the closer role and has yet to sort...

You Mad About The Cardinals Sweep?

Let's play 'Choose Your Own Column':  The Cardinals headed into Washington D.C. to face the Nationals, the same team they RUINED in the Divisional series in 2012.    Are you A) surprised, almost taken aback, that the Cardinals went in and dominated a very, very good baseball team on the heels of what looked like a complete bullpen implosion.   ...

Cardinals place 1B Matt Adams on DL

Rookie Matt Adams of the St. Louis Cardinals, who is batting .542 in eight games, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique. Adams hasn't played since he had two hits in a 7-3 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. He was scratched from Monday's game at Washington after complaining of soreness. The 24-year-old Adams has three home runs, eight RBIs...

St. Louis Cardinals: Adam Wainwright finally issues a walk in 2-0 win over Washington

So far in 2013, St. Louis Cardinals' ace Adam Wainwright is showing that he is worth every penny of the five-year, $97.5 million general manager John Mozeliak gave him late this spring. Wainwright won again on Tuesday night, pitching into the ninth inning for the second time this year in the Cardinals' 2-0 win over the Washington Nationals. Wainwright is now 4-1 on the young...

Just try to spell pitcher’s name

St. Louis Cardinals reliever Marc Rzepczynski goes by the nickname "Scrabble," and it's no surprise why. In a league that has, in recent years, seen a Grudzielanek, a Mientkiewicz, a Samardzija, a Pierzynski, a Francoeur and a Nieuwenhuis, among others, Rzepczynski's name may be the toughest to spell of them all. Just how difficult is it to spell Rzepczynski?...

St. Louis Cardinals: Stats Of Note 4/24/13

It makes most sense to start with Adam Wainwright when examining results thus far. I must admit, I was left scratching my head a little bit when Wainwright’s extension was announced… it seemed a year or two too long, and last year was good but not great. But all doubts have been silenced with his start to the 2013 season. It already looks like his teammates will be hard pressed...

2013 Fantasy Baseball Rookie Report, Week 4: Shelby Miller’s Stock On The Rise

Shelby Miller continued his hot start Monday night by shutting down the Washington Nationals with eight strikeouts and only two runs over 6.2 innings. Miller gave up only four hits and walked two, and even though his ERA went up to 2.16 we can take away nothing but positives from his third stellar start in a row. He’s now shut down the Brewers and Nationals and has a 26:7 K:BB...

Memphis Redbirds, AutoZone Park sale may have a ways to go

Earlier this month, just as the Pacific Coast League regular season schedule was getting underway, a flurry of articles appeared. Led by the Wall Street Journal, reports of a potential breakthrough in resolving the ongoing unsettled financial status of the Memphis Redbirds and AutoZone Park caused considerable excitement. The St. Louis Cardinals had re-engaged in negotiations to...

The Importance of Sequencing

The St. Louis Cardinals just finished off a sweep of the Washington Nationals, and currently stand at the top of the NL Central with a 13-8 record. At 4.9 runs per game, they’re fourth in the NL in offensive production, which is one of the primary reasons they have outscored their opponents by 27 runs so far. (The other main reason is Adam Wainwright.) Now, though, here’s a...
