Injuries continue to haunt the New York Yankees. On June 4, shortstop Eduardo Nunez, already on the disabled list with a strained left oblique, aggravated his injury while taking batting practice. Nunez had been working out since last Saturday without reporting any pain, but he had not swung a bat much until Tuesday. The New York Times' Jorge Arangure reports that Nunez will undergo an MRI by the end of the week to help determine the extent of the injury. Arangure quoted Yankees general manager Brian Cashman as saying that previous examinations to Nunez's rib cage area have not shown problems, but Nunez still suffers from the strain. Said Cashman, "They keep testing the rib cage area to see what's going on there, and so far it's been negative. He keeps hitting a wall." Manager Joe Girardi feels that shutting Nunez down completely may be the best way for the strain to heal. Nunez will not swing a bat again until he completes more testing and he and the Yankees are sure that he is ready. Nunez began the season as the starting shortstop in place of Derek Jeter, who is out with a fractured ankle until after the All-Star break. Nunez was hitting .200 with four RBI in 27 games. He last played on May 5. Jayson Nix has played the majority of the time at shortstop in Nunez's absence. Through all of their injuries, the Yankees have stayed strong in the A.L. East. Entering play on June 5, the Yankees are tied for second place, 2.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox. They are getting most of their injured starters back, and those who have played have done an admirable job keeping the Yankees close in the meantime.
