While batting in the second inning yesterday, Yankees backup catcher Francisco Cervelli suffered a bruised foot after he fouled a ball off the inside of it. He stayed in the game to run, but was taken out shortly after when manager Joe Girardi saw something he didn’t like while Cervelli was warming up on the field. A CT scan was negative, but a MRI was inconclusive and needed to be further evaluated by doctors. Hopefully for Cervelli’s sake those MRI’s come back clean. Foot injuries can really hurt catchers and if he’s suffered a broken foot or even a bad bruise it could force him to miss an extended amount of time. If that happens he could very easily lose his job as the backup catcher to Jesus Montero, whom the Yankees are leaning toward going with anyway. If it’s just a slight bruise then he would only miss a few days and would still have plenty of time to play and reclaim his job. Related StoriesFebruary 25, 2011 -- Yankees Leaning Toward Je...
