TEAMS: Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees
New York Yankees 1 — Cleveland Indians 3
The Yankees couldn’t take advantage of opportunities in tonight’s 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
Hiroki Kuroda struggled early in his 8 inning-complete game outing and it would be too much. In the 1st inning, the first two Indians that reached base got on base off of a hit by pitch and a walk. Kuroda would pay for this with a three-run home run by Michael Brantley. His struggles appeared to continue in the 2nd inning when two runners got on again but he managed to get out of it. Kuroda would allow just the 3 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts on 108 pitches. The outing by Kuroda seemed to be enough for a win but the offense was not able to seize opportunities.
Indians starter Justin Masterson started out strong in his 6.2 innings and managed to finish his start with just 1 run allowed despite giving up 7 hits and 2 walks on his 106 pitches. The Yankees offense was being handcuffed by Justin Masterson with his upper 90′s fastball and slider the first time through the lineup. The second and third time that the Yankees got to see Masterson, they created opportunities. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases in the 6th inning. Mark Teixeira hit a deep sacrifice fly to center that brought in one run and allowed all of the runners to advance. The bases would be loaded again with a Curtis Granderson walk but a line out and a fly out minimized the damage done by the Yankees. Then in the 7th inning, the bases would be loaded on two singles that would knock Masterson out of the game and a walk but no runs would score. The Yankees would have 9 left on base and went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
Win – Justin Masterson (10-11)
Loss – Hiroki Kuroda (12-9)
Save – Chris Perez (33)
