Pronk’s fourth home run was a game-winning home run. Arizona Diamondbacks 3 — New York Yankees 4   Travis Hafner comes through in the eighth in tonight’s 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.   CC Sabathia started tonight’s game and struggled in the beginning. A two-run home run by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt put the Yankees in an early hole. Sabathia would settle down after the tough first inning that had him throw 31 pitches. A leadoff triple in the fifth inning would put Sabathia in a tough spot again. The run would score on a sacrifice fly. CC Sabathia would grind through the remainder of the game and lived up to his workhorse reputation. He would get six straight outs, finishing off the eighth inning with the lead held. In eight innings, Sabathia allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Arizona Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley held the Yankees silenced through six innings. Through the first five innings, the Yankees only managed three baserunners, only one reaching through a hit. In the seventh inning, two hits and a walk would load the bases and seemingly rattle Miley. Jayson Nix would be the last batter Wade Miley would face as he would walk in the first run for the Yankees. Left-handed reliever Tony Sipp would come in to face Brett Gardner with the bases loaded and he would come through with a two-run single to left field. This hit would tie the game after six innings of scoreless baseball. With right-handed reliever David Hernandez in the game for the eighth inning, Travis Hafner was called on to pinch-hit for Ben Francisco with two outs. The first pitch that Pronk saw became two things, a souvenir and the game-winning home run. Hafner’s fourth home run of the season put the Yankees ahead with Mariano Rivera warming up in the bullpen. Mariano Rivera would enter for the ninth inning and would have a perfect inning for his fourth save of his final season. Ben Francisco got his first hit as a Yankee in his third start of the season (1 for 11).   Win – CC Sabathia (3-1) Loss – David Hernandez (0-1) Save – Mariano Rivera (4)   Notables Diamondbacks *Paul Goldschmidt – 1 for 4, R, 2-Run Home Run (3) in the 1st, 2 RBI (12) *A.J. CC Sabathia and Pitching to the Score

Since Clubhouse Confidential is an off-season only show, the MLB Network has created a new show called MLB Now, where Brian Kenny and Harold Reynolds frequently disagree on differing topics. On yesterday’s show, the two briefly discussed the value of pitcher wins, as you can see in this clip below. Your browser does not support iframes. In that segment, Harold Reynolds cites CC...

D-backs' task gets no easier against Sabathia

The format for when interleague baseball is played has changed, but the Yankees are hoping CC Sabathia's success in it will not. Sabathia remains one of baseball's winningest interleague pitchers as he gets ready to face the visiting Diamondbacks for the first time in nearly 11 years Wednesday night. Sabathia (2-1, 2.25 ERA) is tied for fourth all-time with 22 interleague...

Scott Van Pelt dons fat suit in new SportsCenter commercial (VIDEO)

YouTube ESPN recently debuted a new “This is SportsCenter” in which SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt made 290-pound Yankees ace  C.C. Sabathia look slim.  SVP threw on a suit, loads of blubber and horizontal stripes whereas Sabathia wore his pajama-like Yankee pinstripes. Here’s the prep work that SVP had to put in to push the scale past Sabathia…

Yankees rally to give Sabathia third win of season

The New York Yankees rallied for a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. CC Sabathia went eight innings, yielding three runs on six hits. With the win he is now 3-1 on the year. The Yankees trialled going into the bottom of the seventh but rallied for four. He’ll take on the Rays in Tampa next.

SportsCenter spot with CC Sabathia lauds benefits of vertical pinstripes (video)

While it is nowhere on par with John Clayton’s phenomenal “This is SportsCenter” ad from  last September, ESPN’s latest entry into the always-amusing ads promoting its flagship show is nevertheless a delightful little commercial. Starring New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, the commercial features the husky hurler extolling the slimming benefits of the Yankees uniform’s...

D-backs can't hold lead in second straight loss

NEW YORK (AP) -- Travis Hafner had a pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning to make a winner of CC Sabathia, who settled down after a shaky start and helped the New York Yankees beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 Wednesday night. Brett Gardner had a game-tying two-run single in the seventh for New York, which broke through after being stymied by Wade Miley for six innings. Sabathia...

Scott Van Pelt put on a few pounds in new This is SportsCenter ad

Vertical stripes - pinstripes even - are supposed to have a slimming effect. On the flip side, wearing horizontal stripes or hoops does the opposite, making you look a bit wider than you actually are. These theories have been put to the test, but the best evidence may come courtesy of this new This is SportsCenter ad.  CC Sabathia is having a casual conversation with Steve Levy...

Yankees: Hughes holds keys to sweep

The New York Yankees are looking for their first series sweep of the season after beating the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second night in a row. English: goldschmidt, 2011 (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Following a gutsy performance by CC Sabathia, who gave up three earned runs and six hits but grinded it out eight innings, Travis Hafner was the game’s hero. Nunez's Routine Play Helps Secure A Yankees Series Win

The game was almost over last night. Yankees ace, CC Sabathia, had successfully bounced back from a rough first inning to give up only three runs over eight innings. The offense, led by Brett Gardner and Travis Hafner, showed just enough combined patience, timing and power to eke out a win. Only Mariano Rivera needed to come in and shut the door against his 2001 World Series nemesis...

MLB Game Picks - Wednesday: April 17, 2013

Yesterday featured some brilliant picks. The Twins over the Angels? I had it. The Padres over the Dodgers? Yep. Got that one. Unfortunately, there were some really stupid picks that canceled out the smart ones. Picks like the Indians over the Red Sox. Did I really pick Ubaldo Jimenez. Oh Ubaldo. Ubaldo. What the heck was I thinking? And I picked the Cubs over the Rangers!? There...
