Phil Hughes pitched 8 scoreless for his first win. (Source: Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images) Oakland Athletics 2 – New York Yankees 4   Phil Hughes put together his best start this season in today’s 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics.   Phil Hughes started today’s game and was outstanding. Defense helped him right from the beginning. The first batter, John Jaso, almost went deep like Rosales yesterday but Ichiro Suzuki would rob the A’s catcher of a home run. Right from the start of the game, Hughes had everything going his way. Phil Hughes got fly outs, ground outs, strikeouts and everything he needed to put together his best start of the season. Phil Hughes would end his day by getting the final 10 batters he faced out. Phil Hughes would go eight scoreless innings with just four hits and a season-high nine strikeouts, throwing 117 pitches. Chris Stewart got the Yankees offense going against former Yankee Bartolo Colon. In the third inning, Stewart hit his second home run of the season to put the Yankees ahead by one. In the fifth inning, Lyle Overbay jumped on the first pitch he saw and took Colon deep for his fifth home run of the season. The Yankees didn’t need just the long ball to get runs on the board. They showed this in the sixth inning. Robinson Cano would leadoff with a double and would advance on a fly out by Vernon Wells. Travis Hafner would come through with a single that falls between the infield and outfield in left, extending their lead to three. Then in the seventh inning, Eduardo Nunez would hit a triple and would score on Brett Gardner’s single through the middle infield. Shawn Kelley would be the first reliever called on in the ninth inning with a four-run lead but his leash would be short as the first batter reached base on a single and “Enter Sandman” would be played. Mariano Rivera would be called on in a non-save situation and, after allowing two runs in, would finish off the game and get Phil Hughes his first win of the season. Robinson Cano has a five-game hitting streak. Chris Nelson made his Yankees debut today at third base and was hitless, striking out two times in four at-bats.   Win – Phil Hughes (1-2) Loss – Bartolo Colon (3-1)   Notables Athletics *Seth Smith – 2 for 4, 2B, RBI (17) *Yoenis Cespedes – 2 for 4, R Yankees *Chris Stewart – 1 for 3, R, Solo Home Run (2) in the 3rd, RBI (4) *Lyle Overbay – 2 for 3, R, 2B, Solo Home Run (5) 5th, RBI (13)   Current Yankees Record: 18-11   Get your Yankees Tickets from our friends at TiqIQ.

Yankees: Seattle’s ex-pitching prince Pineda

It was about 18 months ago that the Yankees traded top prospect Jesus Montero for Mariners pitching phenom Michael Pineda. Michael Pineda (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Pineda arrived to Spring Training with a bum shoulder that required surgery, which has barred him from throwing his first pitch in the Bronx. Well that is all about to change, as GM Brian Cashman told ESPN New York that...

Ichiro Suzuki’s $23,500-a-Month Apartment Comes With Gigantic Refrigerators, Six Bedrooms (Photos)

Ichiro Suzuki is known to do funky things to stay in peak baseball shape, like keeping his bats in a climate-controlled case. We can only guess what he uses his new, giant refrigerators for. A massive place to keep his snacks is just one of the perks Suzuki has going for him in his new digs at 111 Central Park North. The kitchen reportedly includes two fridges, two dishwashers and...

John completes the Lyle Overbay Homer Holler and, in doing so, for the first time ventures into the domain of 1980s alt-country music

During yesterday’s Hughesian victory over the untrimmed beards of Oakland, The Master revealed one long-awaited Homer Holler and fueled the growing Yankee “Adopt Lyle Overbay” campaign by adding a secondary component to the regular clobber-slobber.For starters, John ended speculation that Chris Stewart, an eternal backup catcher, would never receive his personalized Homer Holler...

Minors Week in Review: Musty Returns

Ronnier Mustelier returned to action this week (Photo Credit: Trenton Thunder) Every Sunday through the remainder of the season, we will be doing a “Week in Review” of the minor league level. Covering four teams in a night gets time-consuming, and at BronxPinstripes, (I think) we want quality over quantity. Therefore, I will put all my efforts into touching on some of the big...

Mickey Mantle’s alleged corked bat to be auctioned off

While there is zero evidence tht a corked bat actually helps a batter to hit a ball further, there are still people out there that believe it makes a different. New York Yankees Hall of Fame centerfielder Mickey Mantle, the greatest player ever in all of sports that never actually reached his full potential, allegedly used a corked bat sometime during his career during the 1960s...

First Month Review: American League

Which team do you think has been the most surprising in the American League to start the year? Which team would you think has been the most disappointing? I can give you a clue on who are my lead teams for both categories.   After a month of baseball not much has changed for a few teams in the American League from where they left off last season. In the AL Central the division leading...

New York Yankees’ Mariano Rivera In A League Of His Own

The traditional definition of a closer is “A relief pitcher called upon to protect a lead late in a game.”  However dictionaries around the world should revise their respective definition to the most exact wording of all. “Mariano Rivera”. Plain and simple, no other explanation or definition required. As a loyal supporter of the Toronto Blue Jays, I have witnessed the...
