Pettitte notched the first win of the season with eight strong. Boston Red Sox 2 — New York Yankees 4   Andy Pettitte kept the Yankees from being swept in today’s 4-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.   With two losses to start the season, the Yankees turned to Andy Pettitte to get the first win of the season. In eight innings, the 40-year-old Pettitte allowed just one run on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He got into an early problem in the first inning with two on and two out. A wild pitch that caught both Francisco Cervelli and Andy Pettitte off-guard created a play at the plate. Cervelli hustled to get to home plate and he successfully defended the plate, ending the inning with excitement. He would continue to allow a hit but would induce a total of three double plays, including one in his final inning of work. The eight strong innings of one-run baseball was just what the Yankees needed after two less than average outings by Sabathia and Kuroda. The Yankees got to Ryan Dempster despite two outs in the second inning. Travis Hafner led off with a single but two strikeouts made the inning look bleak. Eduardo Nunez hit a ground-rule double and Lyle Overbay would come through with a two-run single to give the Yankees their first lead of the season. In the third inning, Brett Gardner jumped on a first-pitch fastball and hit his first home run of the season. Francisco Cervelli would provide insurance for the Yankees in the seventh inning when he hit a no-doubt solo home run into left field, his first of the season. With a three-run lead in the ninth inning, the signature music, “Enter Sandman,” would echo through Yankee Stadium to bring in Mariano Rivera, for his first save opportunity of his final season. Rivera would walk the first batter he faced, Dustin Pedroia, and he would score after a double and a groundout. With the lead now at two and the tying run at the plate, rookie Jackie Bradley Jr. had to figure out #42. With three strikes, including a called third strike, Mariano Rivera shut the door and earned his first save of the season. In tonight’s game, the Yankees attempted to steal twice by Brett Gardner and Eduardo Nunez but were both caught stealing.   Win – Andy Pettitte (1-0) Loss – Ryan Dempster (0-1) Save – Mariano Rivera (1)   Notables Red Sox *Will Middlebrooks – 2 for 4, R, RBI (1) *Jackie Bradley Jr. – 1 for 4, 2B, RBI (3) Yankees *Lyle Overbay – 1 for 3, 2 RBI (2) *Brett Gardner – 2 for 3, R, BB, Solo Home Run (1) in the 3rd, RBI (1)   Current Yankees Record: 1-2
