New York Yankees 3 — Seattle Mariners 1
Andy Pettitte strong in today’s 3-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.
For the Mariners, Joe Saunders took the mound. The Yankees would get on the board early with Mark Teixeira’s double and Robinson Cano’s run-scoring single. The Yankees did this last night and would likely need more than this to win today.
Andy Pettitte started and was strong the first time through the lineup, striking out two and not allowing a baserunner. The fourth inning, and second time through the lineup, would present results for the Mariners. Jason Bay and Kyle Seager would lead off the fourth with a pair of singles. The next batter, Kendrys Morales, nearly hit into a double play but Jayson Nix bobbled it, only letting him get one out. The Mariners would score as a result of this failure to turn a double play when Mike Morse hit a sacrifice fly.
Jayson Nix would redeem himself. The Yankees shortstop would come up with two on and two out in the following inning. A single to right field would produce the go-ahead run. Then in the seventh inning, Nix would get some insurance following Brett Gardner’s double with a single to center field.
Outside of the fourth inning, Andy Pettitte cruised through today’s game. Through 7.1 innings, Pettitte allowed just one run on three hits without a walk and six strikeouts. David Robertson would help Andy out of the eighth inning and Mariano Rivera would put two on but would strikeout three for his 22nd save of the season.
Today was Pettitte’s 250th career win. It was a good day for the Pettitte family.
