(Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images) New York Yankees 9 — Minnesota Twins 5   The Yankees got contributions up and down the lineup in today’s 9-5 win over the Minnesota Twins. Ichiro started the game with a double. Zoilo Almonte followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no one out. Robinson Cano would continue being a big contributor in the series, this time with a sacrifice fly to plate the first run of the game. Travis Hafner followed with a double and Vernon Wells would single in another two runs. Vernon Wells would cash in again when he plated Travis Hafner, who began the third inning by getting hit with a pitch. Shortstop Luis Cruz would also bring in another run. In the sixth inning, Lyle Overbay would walk to start the inning. Luis Cruz would double to put runners at second and third with no one out. Alberto Gonzalez singled in a run and after one out and a pitching change from rookie Kyle Gibson to left-handed reliever, Brian Duensing, Ichiro would strike again. The Yankees right fielder would triple in two runs to right field. The starter to benefit from this potent offense was David Phelps. The 26-year-old right hander pitched well with his nine run gift. He gave up the first of Justin Morneau’s two home runs in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, Phelps began reaching the end of his day. He would get one out in the inning but allowed three singles to bring in a run. This was the end of his day. Joba Chamberlain would relieve Phelps and the one batter he faced singled in one of the inherited runners of Phelps’. Boone Logan would allow another of the inherited runners but ended the inning and the line on Phelps. David Phelps went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out five. Boone Logan would stay out there for the start of the eighth inning and allowed the other home run from Justin Morneau. It would follow with a single and a walk before Shawn Kelley would bail Logan out of trouble with three outs. David Robertson would keep the game in control with a solid ninth inning of work to end the game and complete the sweep of the Twins. With 13 hits as a team, Ichiro Suzuki led the charge atop the lineup with three hits, falling a home run short of the cycle.  Zoilo Almonte followed with a pair of hits. Robinson Cano would go hitless and end his streak of five games but contributed with a sacrifice fly. Travis Hafner added three hits and scored twice. Vernon Wells also showed some signs of earlier this season with two hits, bringing in three of the nine runs. Even recently acquired infielder Luis Cruz contributed two hits and brought in a run. Let’s see if the Yankees can carry this momentum.   Win – David Phelps (6-5) Loss -Kyle Gibson (1-1)   Notables Yankees *Ichiro Suzuki – 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI (21) *Vernon Wells – 2 for 4, R, 2B, 3 RBI (34) Twins *Justin Morneau – 2 for 3, 2 R, 2 Solo Home Runs (6) in the 4th & 8th, 2 RBI (50) *Pedro Florimon – 2 for 3, R, RBI (25)   Current Yankees Record: 46-39   Get your Yankees Tickets from our friends at TiqIQ.
