Who needs offense when you have Hiroki Kuroda? The Yankees’ best pitcher delivered another brilliant performance shutting out the Rangers over seven innings to lead the Bombers to a 2-0 win on a steamy afternoon in Texas. Kuroda held the Rangers to six hits and one walk striking out three to help the Yanks earn a split of the four-game series and finish a seven-game road trip on a high note. “He’s been a constant in our rotation for the past two years” Joe Girardi said. “He’s given us big innings big wins. We finished this road trip 3-4; it’s not exactly what we wanted but it’s a lot better than 2-5.” Kuroda has now fired at least seven shutout innings in six starts this season but the righthander was typically critical of his performance despite his sparkling pitching line. “I don’t think I had any particular pitch that was working well” Kuroda said through his translator. “From the get-go I didn’t have a good outing but I was able to get big outs and put up a decent outing.” Brent Lillibridge who had the game-winning hit Tuesday night had a run-scoring double against Derek Holland in the sixth on Thursday to snap the scoreless tie.
