Left-hander Will Smith was a pedestrian 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts for Class AAA Omaha this season before the Kansas City Royals purchased his contract Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Royals thrust him into the rotation on baseball's biggest stage -- Yankee Stadium -- against a star-studded, veteran lineup. Smith, 22, was not quite ready for his Broadway debut, giving up three runs in the first inning on homers by Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez homered again in the third inning. Smith's final line was 16 batters faced, five runs and six hits, including the three homers. He walked one and struck out one in 3 1/3 innings in an 8-3 loss to the Yankees. To make matters worse, the Yankees started veteran Andy Pettitte, who came out of retirement this season. Pettitte earned his 242nd major league win, while Smith is looking for his first. Pettitte improved to 14-3 against the Royals. He has not lost to them since Aug. 18, 1999, when Smith was 10 years ...

Will Smith gets a Royal welcome at Yankee Stadium

Will Smith, one of the Royals pitching prospects, didn’t show his potential in Wednesday night’s 8-3 loss to the New York Yankees. Smith pitched three and a third innings, giving up six hits and five runs, all earned, with three of the runs home runs. He struck out one and walked one. Smith left the game with a glittering 13.50 ERA and got the loss. After Smith faced 16 batters...

Wil Myers on the move

With Wil Myers, the prize prospect of the Kansas City Royals organization, much-anticipated promotion to Omaha last week, conversations began swirling about his future with the franchise. An injury-plagued scuffle at Northwest Arkansas last season knocked Myers a bit off schedule. Instead of starting the season at Triple-A, he returned to Double-A to prove himself. Prove himself...

Colon drawing comparisons to Jeter

Now, this is the Christian Colon the Royals envisioned when they drafted him with the fourth overall pick of the 2010 draft. After a slow start, Colon has heated up in the month of May and raised his average to .312 with a .370 on-base percentage for the Class AA Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Colon has three homers, 15 RBIs and eight stolen bases. That's a significant improvement...

“Our Time” to the trash can

The Kansas City Royals failed at their pre-season pitch to their hometown faithful of the fact that this is truly the time the Royals will start winning.  Along with the rest of the fans around the midwest I drank the Kool-Aid and believed that this could be our year.  Now that being said this team is still going to win ballgames this season and at times will show glimpses of what...

Wilmington Blue Rocks Sweep Away Potomac Nationals; Complete 5-1 Homestand

About 2 weeks ago, Wilmington Blue Rocks manager Vance Wilson implied his team to start hitting more to pick up the good efforts the pitchers were offering. After seeing the Rocks complete the sweep of the Potomac Nationals (Washington) in a mid morning school kid's special (the game started at 11:05am) its safe to say the team is playing at a high level in all facets of the...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Yankees 8, Royals 3

Don’t you just love it when stories that take weeks to write need but a few hours to be dismantled? After weeks of single after single, many (including myself) were discussing the transformation of Alex Rodriguez from slugger to virtual slap-hitter. Coming into the game, his OBP was an impressive .369, but his .404 slugging percentage left much to be desired. So, with rookie Will...
