PHILADELPHIA—The Yankees made a powerful statement with their 8-5 victory in Game 3 of the World Series on Saturday night. Actually, they made at least three statements:
Their offense is fine
New York's bats, mostly quiet for two games, came alive after being shut down by Cole Hamels for the first three innings. The Yankees pounded eight hits over the next five innings, including homers by Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Hideki Matsui. Even winning pitcher Andy Pettitte contributed with a RBI single in a three-run fifth when New York took the lead.
Their manager is OK, too
One game after Joe Girardi benched the slumping Swisher, the right fielder responded with a double and homer. "The guys all talked to me and I just got back to being me," Swisher said.
