New York Yankees right-handed starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda was hit hard by the Baltimore Orioles last night before actually being hit by the O’s. The veteran took a comebacker off his right calf, and he was eventually removed from the game. Despite the injury, the Yankees expect Kuroda to make his next start, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Manny Machado’s line drive up the middle connected with Kuroda’s calf in the second inning. He remained in the game and retired the final batter of the inning, but his command appeared to be off when he returned for the third frame. Kuroda gave up a double and single to Adam Jones and Chris Davis to lead off the third, and the Yankees then decided to lift him for a reliever. Following the game, manager Joe Girardi told reporters that the ailment is “all muscular,” and Kuroda backed this up by saying that he’s thankful the ball didn’t strike him on the bone. New York hasn’t officially set its upcoming rotation, but Girardi said he expects Kuroda to pitch again Tuesday against the New York Mets. Entering last night’s contest, Kuroda was 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA. However, the O’s lit him up for five runs on eight hits in two-plus innings of work.  Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?

Jeter uses 'Philip' alias for Starbucks order

I can't quite put my finger on it, but this "Philip" character looks familiar. According to the New York Post, Derek Jeter was spotted leaving a Greenwich Village Starbucks with the name "Philip" on the side.  Which means one of three things...the New York Yankees captain is still using a pseudonym when in public (he used to go by "Johnny Drama"...

Yankees game 46 lineup: 5/22/13

The Yankees look to win the series tonight in Baltimore after dropping last night’s game in extra innings. New York has the right guy on the mound in Hiroki Kuroda, who is 4-1 with a 1.22 ERA in his last five starts following a Yankee loss. The lineup tonight has a different feel, as Brett Gardner rests and Curtis Granderson slides into the leadoff spot. The Yankees have a day...

Yankees' Michael Pineda nearing a rehab assignment

The New York Yankees would love to see the player they traded away Jesus Montero for actually make an appearance for them.  Michael Pineda has suffered through two seasons of shoulder problems now, but he may be inching closer to a return.  In fact, Pineda may soon be ready to go out on a minor league rehab assignment.  This according to Andy McCullough of the New Jersey Star...

Yankees injury news and notes

There’s plenty of news on the injury front, as the wounded Yankees are slowly but surely getting healthy. Here are a few notes and updates: Mark Teixeira (wrist): Tex could start a rehab assignment with Double-A Trenton as early as next Tuesday, according to Erik Boland of Newsday. He’s been participating in simulated games and took batting practice down in Tampa yesterday. It’s...

Does Jeter have a secret name?

Could a grande blonde French vanilla get Yankees star Derek Jeter back to baseball before the All-Star break? Who knows what Jeter's favorite coffee is, or how his rehab from his broken ankle is progressing. There is now photographic evidence, however, that Jeter stopped by Starbucks the other day, and he walked off with a coffee designated for "Philip." Whether Jeter...

Yankees game 47 lineup: 5/24/13

After losing two out of three from Baltimore, the Yankees find themselves in Tampa to take on the Rays. David Phelps gets the start for New York, and will hope to continue his string of recent success. Against Toronto in his last start, Phelps went seven innings giving up six hits, one run and registering eight strikeouts; seven innings represents the longest outing of his career...

Teixeira expects to play in minors Wednesday

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira says he expects to play in a minor-league game Wednesday with Double-A Trenton. It will be his first game since hurting his right wrist in early March while preparing with the U.S. team for the World Baseball Classic. Manager Joe Girardi watched while the All-Star took part in an extensive simulated game with infielder Kevin Youkilis at the Yankees...

Derek Jeter 'Caught' Nabbing Coffee Belonging to 'Phillip' (not really)

In his time off it appears that New York Yankees superstar Derek Jeter likes to troll the local Starbucks for free coffee whenever someone doesn't answer the call when their name is announced. Don't laugh. That crap is expensive (and so damn good). You know I'm just kidding, right? Apparently Jeter thinks that if he goes into Starbucks and says his name...

Elmer Bliss - a record-holder of sorts for the Yankees

I wrote a historical piece for It's About the Money, Stupid on Elmer Bliss, who pitched one game for the Yankees (Highlanders back then) in 1903 that still stands as a record of sorts. Check it out.

The Yankees Label Chicago Beer "Imported"

Forgive them Lord, they know not what they do.  In the world of the New York Yankees, the earth revolves around them, NY is the team's land and everything else is foreign territory.  All of which goes to explain why beer drinkers at the new Yankee Stadium have been gouged an extra couple bucks for an imported beer that doesn't quite merit the term.  Generally...

Winding-up order for Shrimpers

Former USA skipper Claudio Reyna has been appointed director of football at New York City FC ahead of their inaugural MLS season. New York City FC was unveiled as the MLS expansion team earlier this week and is part of a partnership between Manchester City and the New York Yankees. Reyna, who captained City during his four-year spell in England, is effectively the first employee...

Pineda Getting Closer

From Andy McCullough:Pineda, a 24-year-old righty, threw five innings in an extended-spring game at the team’s minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla. His fastball velocity sat at 93 mph, general manager Brian Cashman said. After one more game at the complex, Pineda could begin a rehabilitation assignment, a 30-day jaunt that could lead him to the majors. “I’m happy so far that...

Of all the injured Yankee stars set to return, Chien-Ming Wang could be the most important, and he is rapidly approaching a crossroads

In occasional bursts of optimism, or Oxycontin, John Sterling will describe a healing Yankee star as being like a trade where we give up nothing. For example, when Mark Teixeira comes home, we may only have to jettison Ben Francisco or Dellin Betances - at first, anyway. But the month of June may resemble more of an off-season house-cleaning than a trade. After Robbie, our entire...
