New York Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes struggled through a 4 1/3-inning, six-run loss against the Atlanta Braves last week, so he took the mound Tuesday looking for improvement against the Cleveland Indians.

"Larry and I always talk about bounce-back outings," said Hughes, referring to pitching coach Larry Rothschild. "You try to put together as many good ones as you can, but when you do have a bad one, try to put up a real good one after that."

Hughes responded brilliantly, throwing eight scoreless innings in a 6-4 win over Cleveland, improving to 8-6 with his fifth win in his last seven starts.

"That's big; I'll try to use this one as a stepping stone to get on a roll again," Hughes said. "That's the first time I've ever seen an all-left-handed lineup before, and I'm pretty comfortable with my fastball going into lefties. I did that a lot, and things worked out."

Hughes didn't think his stuff was as crisp as it's been at times this season, but he held the Indians to six hits and one walk, striking out four. Hughes has held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine starts, going 7-2 with a 3.48 ERA in his last 10.

"He just had really good command of his fastball," manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought his curveball was really good. He mixed in some changeups. I thought he pitched up and down, in and out with his fastball and gave us eight strong innings and got out of a couple of jams when he needed to. He got some big double-play balls when he needed to. All around, it was a really good night."
