Phil Hughes' last start in Detroit was a complete-game win over the Tigers, the first nine-inning effort of his career. Hughes was unable to duplicate that performance Tuesday in the New York Yankees' 6-5 loss to the Tigers, allowing four runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Hughes was ahead in the count all night but struggled to put hitters away, causing his pitch count to soar. He needed 42 pitches to face six hitters in the fourth inning alone, including a 12-pitch at-bat against Brennan Boesch that ended in a single for the Tigers outfielder.

"Just lack of execution more than anything," Hughes said. "I really felt comfortable in the first three innings, and then something just kinda left, and I couldn't locate my fastball as well as I wanted to, and I got away from my changeup a little bit."

Hughes entered the game with a 10-4 record and a 3.24 ERA since May 6, including a 7-3 record and a 2.77 ERA over his past 11 starts. Tuesday's setback won't cause him to lose much sleep, as his arm feels good and he's been able to bounce back from the occasional bad start over the past three months, not letting things drag him back into the type of funk he experienced in April.

"We always talk about bounce-back outings, take a day to regroup and figure some things out, have a good bullpen, go from there," Hughes said. "I don't think it's anything where I need to go to the drawing board or anything like that. It's just one of those nights."
