NYC Sports Nation:
In years past, the New York Yankees would be a lock securing top free-agents. But times have changed, the fiscal responsible Yankees now have a budget. And that magic number is $189 million for 2014, mandated by owner Hal Steinbrenner.
At this moment, the Yankees have $120 million locked into six players for next season. That number drops in 2014 to $74 million locked into three players, however, that doesn't include giving extensions to Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano, and any pending free-agents Cashman signs this offseason to multi-year contracts.
The Yankees need to fill multiple holes on their roster, which include outfielders, starting-pitching, relief-pitching, and catcher.
One of their free agent targets is outfielder Torii Hunter.
Hunter, 37, had .313 average, 92 RBI’s and .817 OPS. for the Angels last season and is being recruited by Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees.
There were rumors that the Yankees wanted to offer Hunter a one-year deal, but the aggressive Tigers are willing to add an extra year for his services. Making it harder for the Yankees to get the outfielder of their choice.
That extra year could be a wrench in Cashman's plan of getting the team to that mandated $189 million payroll in 2014.
Can the lure of playing in Yankees stadium lure Hunter into donning pinstripes or will an extra year and more money win the heart of the outfielder?
It's a fight.

The New York Yankees enter this off-season with so many questions that when I started mulling over the issues as a whole it actually is pretty discouraging.

So to say that GM Brian Cashman has his work cut out for him might be the understatement of the century.
Cashman has been the Yankees GM for 15-seasons, making the postseason...
Back in July of 2011 the Yankees tried to trade for him so this isn't the first time the Yankees have shown interest in Nolasco.
If this is their plan to replace Kuroda than I really can't figure out what the hell they're thinking. Last season, the right-hander went 12-13 with a 4.48 ERA in 31 starts for the Marlins. In 191 innings he allowed 95 earned runs on 214...
Despite a nightmare postseason, Robinson Cano has reason to celebrate. Just four days after winning the Silver Slugger Award for his production at the plate, the Yankees second baseman officially became a U.S. Citizen on Tuesday morning and tweeted pictures as he was sworn in. “Very proud day for me,” Cano tweeted. “I just became a US citizen, God bless America!” A native...
New York Yankees' free agent catcher Russell Martin could be headed west to the Texas Ranger.
According to Buster Olney's tweet, the Rangers are considering Yankees free agent Martin as an option behind home plate.
Russell,29, hit .211 average, 21 HRs and 53 RBIs last season for the Yankees but struggled...
Last month, the CW - that's conventional wisdom for you outsiders - seemed to be that Hiroki Kuroda and Russell Martin loved bagels, cherished subway rides, enjoyed homeless people and totally grokked New York City, so all we had to do was send them the contract, and they would sign it. Now, well, maybe they're not so sure. The subways do sometimes have a pungent aroma, and...
(CUE THE NEIL DIAMOND)
Things may not have been so grand for Robinson Cano — after struggling through the playoffs a couple of weeks ago — but things are really looking up for the New York Yankees second baseman in recent days. After winning the American League Silver Slugger award last week for being the top offensive player at his position for the third straight year, Cano also became a citizen...
Ruben Rivera is best known for being Mariano Rivera's cousin, which is quite possibly the only thing he's ever done right in his life. When with the Yankees, he was released because the players voted him off the team after being caught hocking Derek Jeter's glove and bat to a sports memorabilia dealer. Below you can see what Giants broadcaster Jon Miller described as...
It is again that time of year when free agent rumors dominate baseball headlines. Unfortunately, it is usually difficult – if not impossible – to determine the original source and the credibility of the news.
In some cases, members of the media may come up with ideas that appear to be their very own. The only difference between them and random proposals floated on countless message...
The new logo for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Photo: MiLB.com)
One of the first changes made by new ownership of the of New York Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate was to announce their intention to change their name from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and allow the fans to select the new name in an online poll. As a result, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are no more.
If they do lose Martin, Napoli would be a pretty good replacement. After a great 2011 campaign, Napoli fell off a bit last season hitting .227/.343/.469 with 24 HR and 56 RBI in 108 games for the Rangers. Not great, but better than the numbers Martin put up the last two years.
When Gil Patterson left the Oakland A's organization for the New York Yankees, the A's didn't have far to look to find their newest minor league pitching coordinator. Scott Emerson, a longtime and well-respected pitching coach in the A's organization, takes over a program that has developed some of the best young pitchers in baseball over the past 20 years. We spoke...
TRENTON, NJ – Former Yankees pitching great and YES broadcaster David Cone hopes the Yankees don’t have a power shortage in 2013.
He feels the team’s pitching will be fine, but realizes the team will have to come up with a replacement for outfielder Nick Swisher, who rejected the Yankees’ $13.3 million qualifying offer and is seeking a multi-year deal in the $15 million per...
He can now play for the US in the WBC
He becomes an American citizen, and the first thing he does is declare FREEDOM OF FACIAL HAIR.Dammit, he's right. The Yankees must end the repressive, 1890s ban on facial furniture, lip thistle, chin hemp or scalp shrubbery. It is 2012. It will soon be 2013.NO MUSTACHE, NO PEACE. NO MUSTACHE, NO PEACE.WHAT DO WE WANT?END TO YANKEE FACIAL HAIR BAN.WHEN DO WE WANT IT?NOW.
