The New York Yankees are dealing with multiple injuries as
the regular season approaches – including Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez and
Mark Teixeira. You can add two more names to that list, as Clay Rapada and Phil
Hughes are likely to begin the year on the disabled list.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters – including Andy McCullough of The Star-Ledger – that his “guess” is that Rapada will begin the
year on the DL. The left-hander has been sidelined due to shoulder bursitis.
Due to Rapada’s injury, McCullough says the door is open for a player like Cody
Eppley or Shawn Kelley to grab a spot on New York’s roster.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com says Hughes is also likely to be on
the DL come Opening Day. He’s pitching again – appearing in a minor league game
today – but he probably won’t be ready in time to start the year on the Yankees’
active roster. However, Hoch notes that Girardi won’t commit to that yet.
