The Yankees are most likely to make qualifying offers to Rafael Soriano and Nick Swisher prior to Friday's 5pm deadline. If the players accept the offer, they will be signed at that price. If refused, they become free agents and the Yankees will receive draft compensation after they sign elsewhere. Soriano opted out of his contract on Wednesday. He was due $14 million next season in the final year of a three-year, $35 million contract, but instead will get a $1.5 million buyout from the Yankees. According to Yankees' president Randy Levine, "Scott Boras told me he was confident that he could get Rafael a $60-million contract for four years."

  • If Martinez doesn't come back, they certainly need Soriano. As of right now, I think they have to take a chance. As for
Swisher, I love the guy and his attitude and I think not signing him would be a big mistake.

As someone else said, if Steinbrenner were still alive the revolving door would be working again.

    Keep them both.
  • The Yankees have to re-sign Soriano. Rivera is a one year roster man (at best) and hasn't pitched since April. Joba has much improved in reliability but is still not a sure thing set up man, nor could he replace Rivera if he goes down again. Forget Robertson, he's just not proven to be NY strong. The Yankees cannot go into the 13 season without Soriano. Just sign him, Rivera's salary goes away after next year.
Swisher would be a good signing if we can get him to agree to a sensible contract. We cannot overpay him as I think he may hve peaked in his career.
