In need of infield reinforcement with Alex Rodriguez sidelined due to a broken left hand and Mark Teixeira nursing a sore left wrist, the New York Yankees acquired Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for reliever Chad Qualls.

The Yankees will replace Qualls in the bullpen by recalling Joba Chamberlain from his rehab assignment, general manager Brian Cashman said.

McGehee, 29, has been the Pirates' regular first baseman this season, but he was the Milwaukee Brewers' regular third baseman the previous two years. His trade value was down thanks to his disappointing numbers this year: .230 average, .297 on-base percentage, .377 slugging percentage, eight homers and 35 RBI in 92 games.

Over his past 15 games, he hit .122 (6-for-49) with one double, one homer and four RBI.

Qualls, 33, had been acquired by the Yankees from the Philadelphia Phillies on July 1 in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. In eight appearances for New York, the right-hander went 1-0 with a 6.14 ERA. Overall this year, he is 2-1 with a 4.89 ERA in 43 appearances.

Qualls will fill the bullpen vacancy created Monday when the Pirates traded right-hander Brad Lincoln to the Blue Jays for outfielder Travis Snider.

Chamberlain is returning from a severe right ankle dislocation, an injury he sustained in March as he was on his way back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has looked good during his three-plus weeks in the minors, showing off a mid-to-high 90s fastball and solid command.

He was due to make one more rehab appearance Tuesday night for Double-A Trenton, but when the Qualls trade was made, the team beckoned him at Yankee Stadium to be available to face the Baltimore Orioles.
