The New York Yankees picked up options for next season on second baseman Robinson Cano and center fielder Curtis Granderson, ESPN New York reported Monday. Cano and Granderson will each be paid $15 million next year. If neither signs a long-term contract with the Yankees, they will be eligible for free agency after next season. The Yankees have considered focusing on short-term deals to lower their payroll to under $189 million by 2014. Owner Hal Steinbrenner has mandated a 10 percent reduction in salaries to benefit from the new collective bargaining agreement and for luxury tax savings. Cano, 30, batted .313 with a career-high 33 home runs and 94 RBI but struggled in the playoffs. He set a major league postseason mark with a 0-for-29 slump (3 for 40 overall). Granderson, 31, hit .232 with 43 home runs and 106 RBI. In the playoffs, he struck out in 16 of 30 at-bats. The Yankees also exercised their $500,000 option on reliever David Aardsma, who only pitched one inning this year because he was coming off Tommy John surgery.
