The New York Yankees suffered a significant loss Wednesday when the team announced 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior labral in his right shoulder, according to ESPNNewYork.com. Pineda, who was acquired from the Seattle Mariners during the offseason in a trade for Jesus Montero, will undergo surgery on May 1, the team said. In his last start of the spring, Pineda was shelled for six runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings in an exhibition game with the Phillies on March 30. He was shelved at the end of training camp and underwent a number of tests before Wednesday's announcement. Pineda had struggles with his pitching last season, particularly in the second half of the 2011 campaign. He finished 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA in what was his rookie major league seas...

Schilling thinks Pineda will be fine after surgery
Just saying the words, ‘Michael Pineda needs shoulder surgery,’ makes me shutter because that is often the beginning of the end of a pitcher’s career.
