The New York Yankees welcomed second baseman Robinson Cano back into their starting lineup last night as they opened their weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles. While New York saw Cano return from his bruised hand, infielder Eduardo Nunez remained sidelined due to his lingering knee injury, according to Josh Vitale of MLB.com. Cano and Nunez both suffered their injuries Tuesday. Cano was hit on the hand by a pitch from Toronto Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ. Nunez, Cano’s injury replacement at second base, went out to twist his knee while attempting to field a ground ball. When Cano initially suffered his injury, there were concerns that his fate would be similar to those of Curtis Granderson and Jayson Nix, who have been sidelined for extended stretches this season after being hit by pitches. However, Cano avoided serious injury, as his X-rays came back negative. While Cano’s recovered, Nunez remains out with his knee injury. While he was sidelined last night, he told reporters that he believed that he was available in case of emergency. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the infielder return to the team’s starting lineup at some point this weekend. Follow @mlbinjurynews Looking for fantasy baseball advice?

Today in Yankees History | 2005

Alex Rodriguez in 2005 On this day in history eight years ago, Alex Rodriguez joined an exclusive club. He became just the second right-handed hitter EVER in the long line of Yankee sluggers to hit 40 home runs in a season, joining Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio who hit 46 round-trippers in 1937 which was the only time he accomplished that feat. A-Rod hit at least 40 in one other season...

Alex Rodriguez a late scratch for Yankees with Flu-Like symptoms

About 45 minutes before today’s Yankees/Orioles matchup began, the Yankees announced that third baseman Alex Rodriguez would be a late scratch for today’s game. The team says that the reason is due to “flu-like symptoms”. Mark Reynolds (who was slated to start at first base) replaced Rodriguez at third, and Lyle Overbay came off the bench to play first. In the original...

With Patchwork Roster, Yankees Make Case They Belong

Let me preface this piece by saying in no way is this a pro-Yankee stance, and that I will never steal buy a Joe Pepitone jersey.  I also promise to never partake in the suite-service of the Legends seats that sit directly behind home plate.  I will never accept free tickets to do this!  It’s terrible that you can eat high-quality shrimp and lobster while watching one of the...

Yankees vs Orioles Game Preview 8/30/13

The Yankees kick off a tough 10 game home stand with the Orioles in town, as CC Sabathia (11-11, 4.81 ERA) goes head to head with Miguel Gonzalez (8-6, 3.77 ERA). Sabathia looked liked the ace of old for five innings his last time out, against the Rays, but it all came to a halt in the three run sixth that cost the Yankees. The big lefty said the whole season has felt like “one...

Preview: Yankees vs White Sox (9/2/13)

Phil Hughes (4-13, 4.91 ERA) and the Yankees look for some redemption after they were on the swept end of a three game sweep against Chicago in August. Jose Quintana (7-4, 3.66 ERA) is on the mound for the White Sox. Hughes had his start pushed back from Sunday after a many MANY rough outings. He was hit for five runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays on Aug. 26, and his ERA...

Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (9/1/13)

Andy Pettitte (10-9, 4.05 ERA) gets the start in place of Hughes as the Yanks go for the sweep against Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.76 ERA.) Pettitte will look to build on the seven scoreless innings he threw against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. That game marked the first time this season he didn’t allow a run in a start. The last time he faced Baltimore, he threw 6 2/3 innings of four run...

Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (8/31/13)

Ivan Nova (7-4, 3.14 ERA) leads the charge for October against Scott Feldman (4-3, 4.56 ERA) in a matinee showdown in the Bronx. Nova’s last start against the Rays was erratic, he tied a career high with six walks but still managed to hold them to just two runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings in a no decision. He has completed at least six innings in nine consecutive starts, and...

Yankees handle O’s again; Closing in on Wild Card spot

The New York Yankees have already taken two of three games against the Baltimore Orioles, with tomorrow still to play, and are now four games out from owning one the American League wild card spots. Friday night the Yankees had won 8-5 in large part due to long balls by Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro along with some key hits by Robinson Cano and Mark Reynolds. Although CC Sabathia was...

The Playoffs Start Tonight

Ten games at home. We need to win eight.Anybody wanna buy a bridge? Starting now, A-Rod must hit in the clutch. Beginning this weekend, Phil Hughes - or whomever it is - must be lights-out. In a few hours, Robbie's hand must heal. Maybe Slade Heathcott will jell! We must play better than we have all season. Eight out of ten. No problemo. Then, we need to drive to Baltimore and...

Yankees Game 134: Five-run 5th big in win

(Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images) Baltimore Orioles 5 — New York Yankees 8   The momentum went back and forth but Ichiro Suzuki turned the tide in tonight’s 8-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Through the first three innings, Miguel Gonzalez and CC Sabathia were in a pitcher’s duel. Only one Yankees batter reached base on a walk but was erased on a double play. The innings...

Yankees Game 135: Super Nova shines bright in shutout

(Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images) Ivan “Super” Nova was outstanding in today’s 2-0 shutout win over the Baltimore Orioles. Ivan Nova got into early trouble when he hit Adam Jones with a pitch and Matt Wieters hit a bloop single in front of Ichiro Suzuki. Nova would induce a double play and got a fly out to escape the jam. Brett Gardner got the offense started with a double...

Yankees' bullpen fails, Orioles win with 7 in 7th

Once Yankees manager Joe Girardi started making walks to the mound, the Baltimore Orioles began running around the bases. In position for a weekend sweep, New York let it slip away Sunday when a normally solid bullpen fell apart. J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones hit three-run homers in a seven-run seventh inning as Baltimore erupted to win 7-3 in a matchup of wild-card contenders. '...

White Sox-Yankees Preview

The New York Yankees can't afford to turn in a series against the Chicago White Sox like they did last month if they want to remain in contention for the playoffs. Phil Hughes surprisingly may give them a chance to get off to a good start in this one even though he is winless in nine outings. Hughes owns a lower ERA against the White Sox than versus any other AL foe as the...
