Yankees new acquisition Ronnie Belliard was originally scheduled to start yesterday, but was a last minute scratch. Now it appears that he could miss at least a week with a right calf strain.
Belliard, 36 in April, was brought into camp on a non-guaranteed minor league contract. He can play first, second, third, and shortstop and will be fighting for a position as a utility infielder. It’s going to be tough for him to win a roster spot as he’ll likely have to beat out both Eduardo Nunez and Ramiro Pena to do it, but an injury to Eric Chavez could make things easier for him.
This injury will not kill his chances of making the team, but they will hurt him. As we get later in the spring there will be fewer at bats for him and in the meantime he is losing at bats to Brandon Laird who is fighting for essentially the same roster spot.
