Via Chad Jennings of the Journal News: Sergio Mitre woke up with some stiffness in his left side on Sunday. He told the Yankees about it, and they decided to shut him down for a few days. He’s hoping to throw again later this week. The problem is in a similar but not identical spot as the oblique injury that put him in the disabled list last year. This is on his back, last year’s injury was closer to his stomach. Mitre missed most of June and July with this injury last season. The point is that this is potentially an injury that could linger for some time. He is supposedly in the running for a starting pitching spot and while it is realistic that he could win a job in the rotation it is much more realistic that he’ll end up being the long-man. If Mitre can’t be ready for the start of the season that may open the door for Ivan Nova to be the long-man with Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon in the rotation.
